David Raymond Obituary

David Charles Raymond

October 4, 1954 - December 4, 2023

Charlotte, North Carolina - David Charles Raymond, elder son of Stephen and Patricia Raymond, who was born in Providence, RI, on October 4, 1954, died peacefully on December 4, 2023. A gentle, gregarious, larger-than-life man, Dave's kind, compassionate, positive nature touched many lives.

After graduating from Western Carolina University, Dave worked in the NASCAR world before establishing himself in Charlotte's hospitality community. Employed first by Adams Mark and then Westin hotels, Dave earned professional awards and personal accolades as Convention Service Manager. Dave had many interests, tops, perhaps, being vacationing in Aruba. A huge sports fan – Panthers, Red Sox, Alabama and Liverpool FC – there probably is not a sport he did not enjoy. Dave was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte, volunteered in the parish finance office and as a receptionist and actively served the Youth program. Too, Dave thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at Atrium Mercy Hospital.

Dave was predeceased by his parents and brother, Chris Raymond, so the Raymond family is reunited. Dave is survived by cousins Pete Raymond, Jane Raymond, Sue Jones, Anne Stockdale and Richard Raymond.

A service celebrating Dave's life will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226, on December 19, 2023, at 11:00. All are invited to the inurnment in the church columbarium which will be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. It is requested that memorials be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.

Dave was loved by and will be missed by many.

David befriended Tim and I in 1997 when we moved to Charlotte and could not have been a better friend to introduce us to Charlotte. He made us welcome and introduced us to to Nascar and the Charlotte Checkers and Tim introduced him to cigars. The Raymond family became our friends and we loved them all. The loss of this family is huge to us but we are glad they can all be together again through Jesus.

David was one of four special people in the Raymond family. He was a kind, loving giant among men. I will miss him.

I co-hosted the 'Shafer & The Eggman' morning radio show on then-Oldies Magic 96.1 for nearly 11 years. I've been trying to remember how our morning show's path crossed with David, but I cannot - simply because Dave seemed like the kind of person who you always knew and who was always there, which he certainly was - if you asked him for the simplest favor he was only too happy to oblige. I remember enjoying lunch with him at the Adam's Mark on a number of occasions and was thrilled for him when he moved over to the Westin. Dave took part in a few on-air bits and skits with us and was never one to shy away from a microphone. We often discussed our mutual love of cigars, and made a couple of trips up to Statesville to a retailer who stocked a ton of them. Best of all Dave was the best friend anybody could have. No matter what the problem, Dave was interested in hearing about it and helping you - and he never took no for an answer. The last few years I've been so hopeful that his medical issues would subside and he would reclaim the life he used to have, especially when we would discuss him coming to Oklahoma to visit me. But it was not to be, and now he is no longer suffering and reunited with his parents and Chris. I'll miss you - and I address you as you always addressed me when hanging up the phone - "take care my good friend."
