David Roundtree Obituary

David Roundtree
On Monday, November 12, 2007 God's Angel guided David Roundtree into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
David Roundtree entered into this earthly life on September 16, 1922. He was born in the small town of Allendale, South Carolina to the late Dave Bowman Roundtree and Queen Esther Wallace Roundtree. He was the eldest of three children that God added to that union. His two younger siblings Robert Roundtree and Lillian Roundtree Artis, both preceded him in death.
David or "Dee' as his family affectionately knew him, moved with his family to Charlotte, NC in 1937. While still a young man, he was called to serve his country in the United States Army. Drafted during wartime, he served as a field artillery technician in World War II in the 92nd Infantry Division. This segregated unit was the only African American infantry to fight as a division in World War II in the Italian Campaign. After the war David moved to New York where he resided for 20 years before returning to Charlotte in 1966 with two small children.
Upon his return to Charlotte, he secured employment with Mill Power Supply, a division of Duke Energy. He remained with the company until he retired. Life began again for David Roundtree in 1985. He married the love of his life, Carrie Russell Roundtree on February 2, 1985 and retired in that same year. Retirement agreed with him. He loved fishing, traveling, watching game shows, and meeting every morning with his breakfast buddies: Mitchell and Roosevelt at Hardees and later Bojangles. We called them "The Breakfast Club'.
David Roundtree known to his fellow church members as Deacon Roundtree, dedicated himself as a servant to the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He worked diligently in the church of which his late mother was an active member, Gethsemane Baptist Church. Through the years, he taught Sunday School, sang in the Male Chorus and served as a deacon and trustee. His church family honored his faithful service by naming him Deacon of the Year in 1977 and again in 1998. They also made him Deacon Emeritus in 2006. Deacon Roundtree was strong in his faith. He was a man of prayer and a devout, loving father and grandfather. His quiet presence commanded respect when he entered a room. His gentle-natured and encouraging spirit was an inspiration to many. He always put his trust in God. It's no wonder that his favorite hymn was "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah'.
He leaves a legacy of love and honor. Memories of his love and devotion will be deeply cherished by his loving wife Carrie Russell Roundtree; three daughters Karen ROundtree Lawrence (Keith), Vivian Russell Frazier (Johnny) and Toni Russell Heard; three sons, David Matthew Roundtree (Valerie), Broderick Lydell Russell (Nezzie), and Jeffrey Russell, all of Charlotte; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Massey, Juanita Byrd and Regina Marable, Richmond, VA; two brothers-in-law Jesse Massey of Charlotte and Sherman Artis of Atlanta; ten grandchildren, five great granchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relative and friends. Many hope, many dream, may desire, but we experienced the presence of a great man and we thank God for it.
Funeral service will be Saturday, 1PM at Gethsemane Baptist Church. Wake is 7PM, Friday, November 16, 2007 at Zechariah Alexander, Sr. Memorial Chapel (funeral home chapel). Interment will be in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Alexander Funeral Home is entrusted to serving the Roundtree family.
