Doris "Dorsey" Brown Crawford

Huntersville, North Carolina - Doris Crawford, 94, of Huntersville, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Doris will be warmly remembered by all who knew her for her love of family, basketball and her competitive nature, especially during card games.
Born September 23, 1931, in Stateville, NC, Doris was the daughter of the late Lee and Nellie Brown. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 70 years, Nathan, as well as her siblings: Edna Clement, Lee Brown, Tom Brown, Virginia Cowan, and Louise Smith.
Doris graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1949 as one of the top ten students in her class. She earned a Junior College Standard Degree at Mitchell College in 1951, receiving the President's Medal of Honor for the graduate with highest scholastic standing, along with the Mary Louise English medal and the History award. Doris continued her education at Appalachian State Teachers College, graduating magna cum laude in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She later earned her Master's degree in Education from UNC Charlotte during her teaching career.
Doris began her teaching journey in Troutman, NC, where she taught from 1953 to 1958. After a period of teaching in Orlando, FL, she returned to NC and joined the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. Doris dedicated 22 years to teaching in the English Department at North Mecklenburg High School, eventually serving as the Department Chair. She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators, and held the position of President of the NC Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (Alpha Sigma) from 1994 to 1996.
Doris is survived by her two sons, Dr. John Crawford (Eva) of Charlotte, NC, and Dr. Charles Crawford (Kerri) of North Augusta, SC. She is lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren – Sam, Rachel (Brian), Peter (Abbey), Luke (Ashley), and Kabugo Brian – and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris was a member of Cowan's Ford Country Club at Lake Norman (Stanley, NC) and was a past president of the Ladies Golf Association. She also belonged to the High Meadows Golf and Country Club in Roaring Gap, NC, where she and Nathan had a summer home for many years. Doris was active in the Ladies Golf Association and cherished her golfing ladies' friendships.
In addition to golfing, Doris enjoyed playing bridge and was an active member of bridge groups in both Huntersville and High Meadows, relishing time with her card-playing friends. Doris and Nathan shared a love of dancing and traveled across North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia to attend old mountain music concerts.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Doris was a fan of ACC basketball and the Carolina Panthers. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, taking walks in her neighborhood, and solving newspaper puzzles. Doris was a dedicated long-standing member of Huntersville Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held at James Funeral Home on Saturday, November 29 from 9:30-10:45. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 AM at the Huntersville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, officiated by Reverend T. Doug Ferguson.
