Eleanor Sinnick Obituary

Eleanor
Russell Macomber Sinnick
Mrs. Sinnicks, 93, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully and pain free Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Summit Place Assisted Living in Charlotte where she had lived since 2010.
Eleanor was born April 10, 1918 in Westport, MA, daughter of the late Edward Leonard Macomber and Ada Snowden Buzzell Macomber. Mrs. Sinnicks was a graduate of Tufts University in Medford, MA. Ellie married her late husband, George Steven Sinnicks, on April 19, 1942 in Westport, MA and three weeks later George left to serve in the Pacific theater during WWII with the US Marines. Ellie worked during the war first in the branch office of John Hancock in Boston and then for American Airlines from 1942 until 1945, where she became one of the first female managers in the company. After the war Ellie and George began their lives together. While serving in the Marine Corps George met Jack Blythe of Blythe Brothers Construction Company and he convinced George to move to Charlotte. George ran the Superior Block Company division until he retired in 1981. Ellie began her very long career of service and volunteer work in the community. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and served as president of the Charlotte Chapter in 1949 thru 1951 and again in 1953 thru 1954. Ellie served on the board of the Charlotte Nature Museum and on the board of the Florence Crittenton Home. She also worked with the United Way and Discovery Place. Ellie served along side her husband, George, as an active member of the Shriners. She was a member of the Foxcrofters Garden Club and Book Club for 25 years. She and George were avid bridge players and belonged to a bridge club for many years. They were members of the Carmel Country Club, where Ellie enjoyed playing golf and participated in many tournaments and charity events. George and Ellie traveled extensively around the world for twenty years and accepted a position with the International Executive Service Corps. They worked on assignment in Merida, Mexico, Panama City, Panama, Tegucigalpa, Chile and Sam Pedro Tula, Honduras; during these assignments Ellie taught reading, writing and Sunday school to the children. George and Ellie were members of Covenant Presbyterian Church for over forty five years. Ellie served as an Elder beginning in 1974 for two six year terms. She was elected to another term in 1982. She also taught Sunday school, was the president of the Women of the church in 1966 and became an honorary life member in 1967. She was the Adult Education Chair, and then Chair of the Division of Education. Ellie also chaired the committee to reorganize the Session and was a member of the 'ninety plus' group at the church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sinnicks was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.
Surviving are her son, Steven Edward Sinnicks of Tega Cay, SC and daughter, Susan Ann Sinnicks Bardin and husband, John, of Boulder, CO and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bardin of Newburgh, NY and Sebastean, FL and their daughters, Janice Lee Bardin and Deborah Lynn Bardin, both of Boulder, CO.
A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011, in the chapel at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Joan Watson officiating. There will be a reception following the service in the fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Florence Crittenton Services, PO Box 36392, Charlotee, NC 28236.
Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Please share condolences online at www.hankinsandwhittington.com.

Dear Susan, thank you for letting me and the other folks on the email know how to find this obituary. Though I didn't know you mother, she sounded like someone who loved her community and enjoyed the company of many good people. I hope you, your brother, and John are finding comfort and support among your family and friends. Much love and prayers, Stephen Bruner (San Francisco).

Susan, It was a delightful pleasure to have known your Mother. It was my pleasure to have played bridge with her,
to have her in my home and to meet her for tea whenever she was in our area. Holding you, Steve and John in my thoughts and prayers during this time of transition. -- with love, Marlene

Dear Family,
How I enjoyed knowing Ellie during her short stay at The Little Flower. She was a humble, down to earth, giving, caring, independent woman who was a delight to know. Ellie never bragged about her many accomplishments and involvment in giving of herself and volunteering to so many. I so enjoyed our too few conversations about her rich experiences. When Ellie returned home she invited a group of her friends from The Little Flower to lunch at her home. I was privliged to have been in that group, enjoying her ralaxed hospitality. She indeed enriched my life!
