Evalyn Huntley Obituary

Evalyn Allen Huntley WADESBORO - Evalyn Allen Huntley, 91, died Monday, May 4, 2015, at Penick Village in Southern Pines, NC. Memorial services will be 3:00 PM Thursday, May 7, 2015, at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro with Rev. Benny Clodfelter officiating. The family will greet friends at Leavitt Funeral Home one hour prior to the service. Evalyn was born in Wadesboro on July 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Hampton Bennett Allen and Nannie Huntley Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Walter Huntley; sons, Thomas Allen Huntley and Robert Joel Huntley; a sister, Nancy Allen Snuggs; and brothers Hampton Bennett Allen and Fred Huntley Allen. Evalyn graduated from Wadesboro High School and attended Meredith College. She was a homemaker and found creative expression through needlework, china painting, cooking, and reading. She was active in studying genealogy. Her sponsorship and eight years of genealogy research helped publish The History of the Thomas Huntley Family, which was a sellout. In addition, Evalyn researched East View Cemetery and compiled a complete census. A dedicated member of First United Methodist Church, Evalyn served on several committees and was a leader in her Fellowship Sunday School Class. Evalyn is survived by one son, William Kenneth Huntley and wife, Marilee of Wadesboro; daughter-in-law, Sandy Covington Huntley of Wadesboro; five grandchildren, William Kenneth Huntley Jr. and wife, Ashlee of Pinehurst, Mariette Huntley Roland and husband, Lee of Raleigh, Justin Robert Huntley and wife, Jennifer of Raleigh, Thomas Allen Huntley Jr. of Chapel Hill, Rachael Huntley Strickland and husband, Matt of Durham; and three great-grandchildren, Mary Grace Huntley and William Kenneth Huntley lll, both of Pinehurst, and Huntley Marie Roland of Raleigh. Evalyn is also survived by her sister, Mararuth Allen Cox of Wadesboro; and sisters-in-law, Louise Huntley Garris and Bettie Huntley of Southern Pines; Ruby Huntley and Nancy Huntley of Wadesboro; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 118 E. Morgan Street, Wadesboro, NC 28170; or the Anson Historical Society, 206 East Wade Street, Wadesboro, NC 28170; or Penick Village Employee Fund, P. O. Box 2001, Southern Pines, NC 28388.
