Wingfield Alexander Floyd
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Floyd died December 27, 2009 at the age of ninety-two. She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. on August 15, 1917. She was the daughter of Colonel Joseph Eli Alexander and Lilla Young Alexander and was the great-great niece of Mrs. Stonewall Jackson. She was known as a portrait artist.
Mrs. Floyd was presented at the Terpsichorean Ball in Raleigh in 1936. She graduated from Salem College in 1938 where her great-grandmother graduated in 1838. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oxford, N.C., the Winston-Salem Junior League, the Children of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina.
Mrs. Floyd married James Pleasant Floyd, Jr. of Oxford, N.C. on May 24, 1941. They lived in Washington, D.C. for two years after World War II before settling in Oxford where they raised their three sons. In 1960, they moved to Old Mill Farm, a property south of Oxford on the Tar River, where they lived for forty years. In 2000, they moved to Springmoor, a retirement community in Raleigh, N.C. Her husband died August 1, 2005.
Mrs. Floyd was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, James Pleasant Floyd, Jr. She is survived by three sons, James Pleasant Floyd III, Alexander Graham Floyd and Peter Edward Wingfield Floyd, all of Raleigh; three daughters-in-law, Joan Holmes Floyd, Janet Morrison Floyd and Charlotte Collins Floyd; three grandsons, James Pleasant Floyd IV, Alexander Graham Floyd, Jr. and Michael Cadet Young Floyd and his wife, Shannon Irvine Floyd; three granddaughters, Terrell Lamping Floyd, Christina Wingfield Floyd and Charlotte Frances Alexander Floyd; a cousin, Ruth Young Wilson of Ohio and the children of Lucy Floyd Baird, her husband's sister.
Mrs. Floyd and her family wish to thank the staff at Springmoor as well as Elizabeth Miano and Juliana Muli for their love and support.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oxford on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, those contemplating a remembrance may want to consider a memorial gift to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church or the Richard Thornton Library in Oxford.
