Frank Gaskill Obituary

Frank Winters Gaskill

January 11, 1969 - August 11, 2024

Fayetteville, North Carolina - Dr. Frank Winters Gaskill, III passed away in Fayetteville, North Carolina at the age of 55 on August 11, 2024. Born on January 11, 1969, in Martinsville, VA, he was the son and only child of the late Janice Stovall Gaskill and Frank Winters Gaskill, Jr.

Frank graduated from Kinston High School in Kinston, NC in 1987. Following graduation, he earned his PhD in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A long-time resident of Charlotte, NC, he co-founded Southeast Psych in Charlotte, one of the most respected group psychology practices in the region. He also co-authored "How We Built Our Dream Practice," a book that became a valuable resource for many solo and group practices across the country. Dr. Gaskill worked at Southeast Psych for nearly two decades.

Dr. Gaskill's passion for helping children, particularly those with Asperger's Syndrome (as it was then called), was evident throughout his career. He co-authored "Max Gamer," a graphic novel about an "Aspie" boy who uses his special abilities to become a superhero. The book resonated with many families and professionals, providing a unique perspective on the strengths of children on the autism spectrum. He was widely recognized as an expert in working with neurodiverse clients. His approach to therapy was marked by humor, creativity, and a focus on personal strengths. His work has had a lasting impact on the lives of countless children and their families.

He is survived by his daughter, Olivia, and son, Maddox, whom he loved. They intend to celebrate his life privately.

If it were not for Dr. G (his legendary nick name), I would not be where I am right now in my life. This past year has been tremendously difficult but rewarding at the same time , because of his passing. Dr. G helped me when I was 14 years old to overcome the trauma of being bullied socially, and institutionally by the school I attended. He showed me that the disability of Autism doesn't have to stop me in life.

Dr. G helped me meet the friends in social group that I am still very fortunate enough to be in touch with today over 10 years later. Those friends and I did a bible study not too long ago. Also I currently work as a behavioral therapist for kids with autism. This past year, I also started my business of mentoring young adults with Autism, empowering them to realize they are ABLE, not disabled. Dr. G showed me I can be a leader for the next generation of "Aspie Nation." I miss him so much, but I am so grateful for him. I am praying for his two kids and for them to continue a great legacy ! RIP Dr. G!

Thinking a lot about Frank this week, a year after his passing. I met Frank when I was 14 - I´m 35 today. He was a mentor, role model, and source of support through some of life´s most challenging moments. He taught me to be a better friend, son, and partner, and inspired me to pursue a career in applied psychology that´s been immensely satisfying and rewarding.

Even as I grieve his passing, I can still feel the warmth of his laughter, or the infectious energy of his enthusiasm.

I´m so deeply grateful to have known him.

There are so many ways that Frank was impactful. He was such a big personality. So funny. So smart. So insightful. So intuitive. Yet also hurting and insecure. He helped so many navigate their own pains and struggles and I guess he didn't always tend to his own or we wouldn't be here. He and I bonded over our love of Star Wars. We were both of a formative age when the original trilogy dazzled us to no end and sparked our imaginations, making us long to be like the heroic Jedi Luke Skywalker. Frank most definitely cultivated that Light Side, but as anybody who struggles can attest, the Dark Side beckoned him too. It IS considered the seductive and easy way and we've ALL been there, I just would hate if anybody judged Frank in accordance with his worst days - that hardly seems fair and accurate. It does him a disservice to overlook the abundant good that he brought into this world - and I'll always love him and remember him fondly for THAT. Rest In Peace old friend - You are now one with The Force.

Dr. G ran the most wonderful groups for our son. He made him and the others feel like they belonged, and to be proud of their autism. Thank you, Dr. G, for helping our son feel confidence and a sense of pride. You gave us some life changing advise and sent us parents on a strong course to best care for our children.

Frank helped me establish everything I know as a therapist. I wouldn't have accomplished what I have without his example. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I am so very sorry to hear of Frank´s passing. Back when Southeast psych was just starting. He was extremely helpful to my children as we were going through a divorce. It was great to cross paths at Church at Charlotte years later and even have Olivia in our Sunday school classroom. Ever since we heard the news of his passing, we have been praying for Frank´s loved-ones.

Back in the day, he really was a great man that was so incredibly helpful and I will forever be grateful for his help... even pointing me to look inward.

I do remember one thing he said to me that will stay with me and it brought me great peace.

Again, I am sorry for the loss of a father and friend (and what he once was to so many).

I have so many formative memories with you, many of which lead to me becoming the psychologist I am. I am forever grateful to have had you as my mentor, colleague and co-author. I´m so glad we stayed connected. I would say more, but I´m sure it would just make you cringe. Keep on being the spirit of Max´s grandfather. Thanks, Frank. Love you, man.
