George Kantsios Obituary

George Kantsios
George Kantsios passed away Monday morning, January 30, 2012, due to complications from chemotherapy. George was born in Charlotte on September 16, 1957 and attended Myers Park High School. He graduated from UNCC and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He worked for First Union and Bank of America during his career and was very involved in the community.
George was the epitome of strength, courage, and faith. He had many challenges during his life, but rose to the challenge each and every time. His friends, family and community were dear to his heart.
George served on the Board of Directors of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association; a leader of the Belk College of Business Alumni Interest Group for many years, and served as a board member and treasurer of the Parish Council of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral where he also taught Sunday school and coached girls basketball.
He also was involved with the Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Jaycees.
Some of his challenges included developing Alopecia (loss of hair) as a child, which had a great affect on him. It helped shape his character and strength. As an adult, both kidneys failed and he had to endure hours of dialysis each week for eight years.
In October, 2010, George was blessed with a kidney transplant. A number of relapses occurred, but he finally prevailed. In April 2011, George was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). During all these obstacles in his life, George maintained a positive attitude and good sense of humor that made him one of those special people on earth.
George is survived by his brothers Tom Kantsios and wife Stephanie of Atlanta; Nick Kantsios and his wife Cindy of Charlotte; and, nieces and nephews Emily, William, Maliyah, Grant, and Anna.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mahony, Lisa and all those at Carolina's Hemotology; Drs. Hart, Chuang, Fotiadis, and all those at Metrolina Nephrology; all the special doctors and nurses at Carolina's Medical Hospital.
A Trisagion (visitation) service will be held Friday, February 3, 2012, at 7:00 PM and the funeral Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11:00 AM, both at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC.
The George S. Kantsios Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established for those wishing to make a memorial contribution. Contributions may be sent to The George S. Kantsios Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Harry J. Stathopoulos, 10700 Sikes Place, St. 300 Charlotte, NC 28277.
We will all miss that laugh and smile. May his memory be eternal.

To the Kantsios Family

George LIT UP our Physical Therapy gym everytime he walked in. His smile opened hearts and he always had a kind word for anyone he talked to.He was working on regaining his physical strength, but his spiritual strength was far and beyond the stars.
May your family find comfort in knowing that George made this world a better place.

Tommy,Nick, and the entire Kantsios Family, we send our sincere sympathy to you on the passing of George. I've known him all my life and even after I moved away to Hickory and would come back to Holy Trinity for Church, there was never a time I didn't get a huge smile and hug from him. His faith was evident in the way he lived and loved the Lord by serving the Church and being an inspiration to all of us. May his memory be eternal. We will miss him but Heaven is even greater since his arrival.

It was with great sadness that I heard of George's passing. I too, will always remember his positive attitude, which was such a blessing to all that knew him. There wasn't ever a time that when George was around me that I didn't leave feeling better about things. He was always "a glass half full" type of person. The community has lost a true gentleman. Rest In Peace George. You will be truly missed.

To the Kantsios Family, my sincere condelences. It has been maybe twenty years the last time I saw George. He and I worked briefly together at a convenient store he managed in early to mid '90's in Mint Hill, N. C. I heard about his passing only a few days ago, I was shocked. May he rest in peace. An amazing light was extinguished when George left us. I am a senior citizen but age was never a factor in friendship with George. That marvelous smile and positive personality will be forever etched in my memory. May he rest in peace.

I extend my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of George Kantsios. As a Myers Park classmate of Nick's, I was acquainted with George and remember what a delightful person he was. I lost my own brother not long ago and realize what a tremendous loss this is for his siblings and those who loved George so much. My heart goes out to all those touched by this profound loss.

To the Kantsios Family. I was deeply saddened to learn of George's passing. We became friends in 1986 when I joined NCNB. We remained friends for life. I could always depend on George for kind words and a positve direction. He was indeed a very special person and touched the lives of all those around him. I hope that he knew how much he was loved.

George gave me courage and came to my defense several times during the tough days of JR High School. George demonstrated Jesus in his life by how he cared for and loved others.
