Gilbert Winchester Obituary

At 6-feet-4, the peg-legged pirate towered over his "little mateys" who came for generations to the Riverview Inn on the Catawba River in search of seafood bounty and tales of far-off coves. He called himself Captain Windy.

"Ahoy mate!" the captain would bellow, always drawing smiles as big as a bedtime story.

He'd shake the little hands, kindly slap parents on the back and guide them into the fish camp off Wilkinson Boulevard just before the bridge to Gaston County. "Go on in," he'd say. "Sit anywhere you like. If there's someone sitting there, make 'em move. Just make yourself at home."

That was Gilbert Winchester, who died Saturday at 82. With his twisted red mustache and elaborate Blackbeard get-up, he doubled as a good-hearted pirate and part-time host at the Riverview for 40 years.

He was also a country-western singer, do-gooder for children's causes and host of Captain Windy's "Adventures in Pirate Cove" on WBTV in the early 1960s.

Winchester, who loved nothing more than to make a child smile, died on Oak Island on the N.C. coast, where he and wife Joyce had moved in 1997 from their Gaston County home in Stanley. His wife died last month.

"Captain Windy was like a cartoon character come to life," said Ann Moody of Charlotte, who was probably 5 in the mid-1960s when she first laid eyes on him. "There was nothing scary about him. The way he spoke to children, you could tell how much he cared for them. He seemed to take great pleasure in seeing them smile and be happy.

"For me and my friends, he was the highlight of going to the Riverview."

To one friend, Cammie Alexander of Charlotte, the captain "was larger than life. We thought he was a real pirate. We never called the (fish camp) Riverview. It was always, 'Let's go to Captain Windy's!'"

A captain is commissioned

Winchester was the youngest of 11 children, raised in mountainous Swain County, on Hurricane Ridge near Needmore - west of Asheville.

He grew into a proud man, his word as binding as a contract. He met his wife driving a school bus in Bryson City. They married in 1951 and soon moved to Stanley, where Joyce Winchester had relatives.

A year later, he walked into the Riverview and asked Irwen Burns Sr. for a job. The fish camp had opened just after World War II with 10 booths. Burns made him a waiter.

But gradually Captain Windy (a play on his last name) emerged, he of the Good Ship Riverview. He dressed in tri-corner hat, blouse-sleeve shirts, kerchief, a red 9-pound pirate's coat with gold buttons, knee britches and a peg leg.

A real peg leg. The captain always told his young mateys that a shark had taken his left leg.

Don't tell anyone who still believes his shark story. But he really lost the leg in the Navy after a motorcycle accident that left him unconscious for 18 days and hospitalized for eight months, said his daughter, Betty Wallace.

"The doctors didn't set it at first; they told his mother they didn't expect him to live," Wallace said.

When he woke from a coma, they tried to set the leg but it never healed properly.

In 1951, doctors amputated below the knee.

Five years later, what remained flared up and they took the thigh.

It just added to his pirate mystique. As did the green Amazon parrot named Rita he kept perched on his shoulder. Over the years, he had three parrots, Wallace said.

"Daddy had three (artificial) legs, too, but was more comfortable with the peg leg," she said. "We never considered him disabled. It never stopped him from doing anything."

Devoted to children

Winchester always had another job, mainly as a welder at Pneumafil Corp. in Charlotte.

For years, he also dispatched calls for the Gaston County Police, while Joyce dispatched calls for Stanley police.

But most knew him as the peg-legged pirate, not only at Riverview, but on his TV show (Saturday mornings at 7:30 just after Captain Kangaroo).

In his pirate garb, he strummed his Epiphone guitar and sang country-western tunes in shows throughout the region.

With TV cowboy Fred Kirby, he helped raise money for children's causes. And with Charles Keyes, the "Parson of the Hills," he helped deliver Christmas joy to poor children in Appalachia.

Once in Stanley, Winchester put a needy child with cancer in a side-car hitched to his motorcycle and drove him around town collecting money for his treatment. They raised $12,000.

"Daddy's concentration his whole life as Captain Windy was children," Wallace said. "He loved being surrounded by children. Anytime a child needed help, all they had to do was call him. The only time he ever got mad was when a child was hurt."

I was recently at Pinkys restaurant on Morehead street. Full of pictures of local celebrities and Charlottes past. Saw a picture of "captain Windy" and started reminiscing about the numerous times my family went to Riverview restaurant. Fond fond memories of the larger than life gentle giant. Loved reading the obituary and the precious spirit he had for children.. Makes him all the more a special childhood memory. I love my special pirate more than ever!

When I came in to the Riverview and called him by his name, Gilbert. He would chase me out of the place and everyone would tell me know to call him that. I always say," That is his name and so I called him that." I will say that I will miss him and I am sorry that my daughter will never know the Captain Windy that I knew when I was growing up. I will miss and always love Captain Windy.

It is with much sadness to read about "Captain Wendy". Raised with his children, working with him at Riverview Inn and thinking he was a real Pirate when I was on his TV show at age 6. "Captain Wendy was a well know man. When he needed rubber stops put on his peg leg he came to Mikes's Cobble Shop that my husband at the time owned and had them added on.Memories will carry us on and leave a fond place in our hearts.

I loved my Uncle Gilbert (Captain Windy, which was my father Laban's Brother. I also am so sorry to hear that Aunt Joyce has passed (she was my mother Pauline's cousin). I loved them both very much and it will be a sadder world without them. I can remember riding around Bryson City in Uncle Gilbert's Cadillac convertible sing the Captain Windy song. He used to always try to trick us with his fake leg. What a wonderful man. He will be missed.

We moved to Charlotte (Blacksnake Road) from Gastonia in 1951. Our weekend venture was to go to Riverview, walk along the water and go in to see Captain Wendy. The memories and the stories are too numerous to tell. My sister and I made sure our daughters spent time eating there also. This was always a family gathering - every weekend. I needed a little time to think back to my chilhood today - Captain Wendy made an impact on so many lives and left so many good memories. I am blessed to have known him and see the joy that he spread.

To his family, I wish you well and I hope you will keep his memory alive. He will be missed by so many people.

To my friend Betty and all of the Winchester family, I will always remember Capt. Windy fondly and with great admiration. I was on his show once as a child, frequented the Riverview Inn, and had the privilege of even getting to know him more since Betty and I were classmates in school. He loaned me one of his old guitars once which I repaired, fixed up and learned on and was pleased to return it to him in a restored condition. It was wonderful to see the smile on his face since I had always seen him as bigger than life. He made us all feel very special. His life was a gift to the world.

How wonderful to read these entries and see that Captain Windy reached many, many people from coast to coast! He was friends with my Grandfather, Joe Kelley. I adored Captain Windy. He made you feel so special in those big arms and that vibrant persona! I even had the pleasure of singing with him on stage way back when he made an appearance at a Christmas party at the old missile plant off of Beatties Ford Road.
He made each and every one of us feel cherished, loved, and special with his
huge smile and his heart of gold.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and my thanks for sharing your Dad, your uncle, your grandfather, with us. He will be missed but his legend will live on.

I am a life-long Charlotte resident, and have vivid memories of visits to the Riverview Inn, and more importantly, visits with Captain Windy. My oldest friend, now located in Seattle, WA, calls occasionally, and we often spend the time reminiscing about our childhood days, and the good times we had. More times than I can count, Captain Windy has been referenced in those stories. As far as we were concerned, he was the quintessential pirate and the real deal. He was also one of the nicest persons you would ever want to meet, with a smile and a handshake for all. For the longest time, my friend and I would salute as we drove past the Riverview, out of respect to our beloved Captain Windy. That sounds silly, but we both have genuine love for that icon of our childhood, who along with Joey the Clown provided many wonderful childhood memories of growing up in this area.
I am so glad to now know more about the man behind the pirate costume, and my respect for him is validated and increased.
Dear Winchester Family, I know you can tell what a blessing this man was to so many, as he was to me, and how deeply he was loved here. Your loss is painful now, but you can be so proud of who your loved one was, and what a positive impact he made on everyone, as witnessed by the ample testimony in this guestbook. Thank you for sharing your "Captain Windy" with the rest of us...we are better for it.

God bless...

My parents were living on Park St. in Belmont when I was born in 1949 and I grew up on Sam Wilson Rd. so Cap'nWindy and Riverview Inn are a vivid part of my childhood. I can see him standing to the left of the double lines waiting to be seated and he was sooo tall. He always had a smile and I truly believed he was a pirate. I also remember the long table that sat in the middle of the dining room that we children sat at and him coming by and greeting us. Fond memories

I can remember when A&P had a Grand "re-Opening" of the store at 814 W. Franklin Avenue in Gastonia---Captain Windy was right there and the kids lined up to see him. My dad was the manager of that store and worked for A&P for over 40 years. When I was a child Captain Windy would see my dad and yell "Hey Max, how ya doing" and of course I was just agog because my dad knew Captain Windy! The giants of our childhood will never be forgotten and the feelings we had then will never die.

The best part about going to The Riverview Inn was seeing Capt. Windy. I thought he had to be the tallest person in the world. Our three children grew up going to Riverview to see Capt. Windy. They didn't care if they ate or not as long as they got to spend a little time talking to the Capt. Windy, as my heart remembers him...no not as PawPaw Winchester but simply Windy....will always bring a smile to my face and a little xtra moisture to my eyes. We were bound together by name in the beginning and then by family in the end. And unlike most grandchildren I never got used to calling him PawPaw...it was always "hello Windy" to which he'd smile and reply "well hello Wendy!". Yes all seemed right with the world when greeted with a smile and bear hug (no handshakes for this Wendy!) by the one who appeared to have tamed it on the high seas....or perhaps in the serenity of his salt air living room!

We took our children when they were little and a few years ago we were in town and took our grandsons. Capt Windy had retired but was back for a special visit and they met him! You were the greatest Grandpa I could have ever asked for, and I will always hold you close to my heart.
Grandpa's love had to do with the way he treated you. I always enjoyed him telling me about life. That was his love for me. My love for him was listening to what he said, changing my life and staying out of trouble, doing right, being fair.
I know that his love for Grandma drew him to where he is today, to be with her. I hope to be half the man he was.

July 28, 2010

I have always lived in Charlotte and remember looking forward to visits to see Captain Windy. In the early nineties my in-laws came to visit us from Ohio. My husband and I took them to Riverview. One of my best childhood memories was going to Captain Windy's. We kids were truly amazed that we had a real pirate in Charlotte. RIP Captain Windy and thank you for your kindness and the great memories.

I remember Captain Windy as a small child. My family always went to Riverview Inn for the worlds greatest seafood.I am now 47 & I grew up knowing Captain Windy. Oh how I loved him as a small child. I told him that one day I would grow up & marry him. He was a great man. He will be missed. I love you Captain Windy. I will never forget you or all the fond loving caring memories of you. Rest in peace my friend....

What a wonderful man he was! He brought such joy to my whole family and the many friends we would meet at the Riverview. My children would jump up after they finished eating and run over to shake Capt Windy's hand and have a chat while we lingered over iced tea. Thanks to God for blessing all of us with Capt Windy!

To the Winchester Family:

Captain Windy touched the hearts of so many, including me and my 7 siblings. An outing to Captain Windy's in the '60's was a huge treat. The best part was shaking the Captain's hand and talking with him. The world has lost a fine man. My condolences to you all.

As all the other folks have said, I too have many happy memories of seeing Captain Windy at the Riverview. At this very difficult time, I hope the love you feel from those of us who loved your father will bring you some comfort and peace. Blessings to your family.

What a life well lived. I have fond memories of Captain Windy from childhood.
My children got to know Mr. Winchester as the nice pirate who lived beside their grandmother. May God Bless Mr. Winchesters' Family and fill their hearts with fond memories of a man who made such a difference in so many lives.

I remember going to the RiverView and seeing it as a Pirate Fort! And then there was Capt. Windy inside. He was a treasure to all who Knew and or met him. I feel part of my child hood has passed. Captain Windy! May the Wind Be at your Back! you will be missed!

Mr. Winchester will be missed by many. But not only was he an entertainer, he was knowledgable in metalurgy, welding, drafting, fabricating and teaching others the trade. I was fortunate to be one of them long ago. Roy, if you see this get in touch.

I am a Retired Mecklenburg County Police Officer and Knew Capt. Wendy Well. He was always a Good Friend of the County Police. He was always glad to see us and told us to "Be Careful" when we left. I will never forget, One afternoon Capt. Wendy along with myself and few more County Police Officers went out behind the RiverView and Shot his Flintlock Pistol. Would you believe someone CALLED The Police On Us !!! Such Good Times ! Farewell To A Real Fine Man. Office S.E.(Gene) Catoe

Gilbert and I ran several hundred rescue calls together back in the 80's. I can honestly say he was the best one legged ambulance driver in North Carolina. His compassion was what kept him going. I always admired a man who took what most would consider a handicap and turned it into an asset for everyone else. He will be missed.

What memories. I was one who sent in a card with the whereabouts of the buried treasure and won. A hundred gold doubloons (100 brand new shiny pennies) and several boxes of toys. That was one of the most thrilling times of my childhood. Captain Windy was a hero. He sowed into so many children's lives; God bless his whole family and let them reap the blessings.

I remember him as well, I was on his Saturday TV show on WBTV many times and ate at the Riverview Inn many times. He was a great person and when I got older, He said he remembered me from the TV show. A great loss to the community and to a lot of children that grew up in Charlotte in the early 60's. He will be missed by many.

Sorry for such a great loss. What shows that a person value this gift of life? By the legacy they leave behind. May those happy memories sustain the family and bring some comfort to your heart during this difficult time.

God is for us a refuge and strength, a help that is readily to be found during distresses. May he become your refuge during this time as well.
