Randolph Kennedy, Sr.
Mr. Kennedy, 90, passed away July 8, 2007 at The Agape House. He was born July 19, 1916 in Charlotte, NC. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Craig Avenue Tabernacle ARP Church, 3936 Craig Ave., Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 pm prior to the service at church. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
He was the son of the late Helleams John Kennedy, Sr. and Martha Louise Kirk Kennedy. Hal was preceded in death by his two brothers, Burton A. Kennedy and H.J. Kennedy, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ida Neal Ray Kennedy; his daughter, Sharon Ann Kennedy Gattis; his son, Howell Randolph Kennedy, Jr. "Randy" and wife Tammy; granddaughters, Kalyn Neal and Taylor Zane Kennedy; grandson, Jonathan A. Gattis and wife Laurie; great-grandchildren, Sophie Alexandra Gattis and Baxter Kennedy Gattis; sister-in-law, Esther Kennedy; brother-in-law, John Wilton Ray, Jr. and wife Elizabeth "Betsy" and their children and grandchildren.
In 1934, he graduated from Central H S. He became a manager of the original Spoons Ice Cream Shop until he was appointed to the U.S. Postal Service in 1935. Hal served many positions in the U.S. Postal Service including Dir. of Finance, Acting Post Master, and Asst. Director of N.C. Postal Service. In 1943, Hal entered the US Army and served in World War II, 126th Army Postal Unit to IX Air Force Eng. Command in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He was discharged with four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal.
He was a member of Craig Avenue Tabernacle ARP Church (formerly Tabernacle ARP Church located on Elizabeth St.) As a long time member, he served as Elder, Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and Treasurer of the Church. He also served as Treasurer and President of the Fellowship Bible Class.
The family wishes to thank all family, friends, neighbors, and especially health care givers for their kindness and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Craig Avenue Tabernacle Church, 3936 Craig Ave, Charlotte, NC 28211, Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care or the charity of your choice.
