James Cherry Obituary

GASTONIA -- James Preston Cherry, Sr., 77, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born July 27, 1925, a native of Gaston County and was the son of the late Cecil Cherry and Lillie Lowery Cole.
He is survived by his sons, daughters and their spouses: Gregory and Tricia Cherry, Jimmy and Linda Cherry, Steven and Ann Cherry, Chris and Donna Cherry, Melissa and Joe Deaton, Philip and Cheryl Cherry, Dorothy and Rick Accurso, Amy and David Lawing, Kevin and Myra Cherry, all of Gastonia, and Michael Cherry of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Preston and wife, Laura Ashley, Vincent, Andrew, Timothy, Wesley, Jonathan, Kent, Christine, Jennifer, Maria, Bryant, Taylor, Ian and Connor Cherry, Logan Keeter, P.J. and Ricky Accurso; stepmother, Rachel Todd Cherry; and half-sister, Ann Cherry Rhyne. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Eunice Smith Cherry; a daughter, Mary Catherine; and stepfather, James Elmore Cole.
Mr. Cherry, founder of Fidelity Associates, Inc., served his faith and community in countless ways throughout his 77 years. Mr. Cherry was a loyal servant to the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather; one who deeply loved his family and countless friends. Mr. Cherry served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 and was a submariner aboard the USS Brill in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Cherry was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and served on numerous Councils and Boards at the church and school. Among those organizations near and dear to his heart were The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs of Gaston County and Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia.
Funeral service is 2 PM Friday, January 31, at The Basilica at Belmont Abbey, with Father David Kessinger, Abbot Placid Solari, the Priests of Belmont Abbey and the Clergy of the Diocese of Charlotte officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be his sons, Gregory, Jimmy, Michael, Steven, Chris, Philip and Kevin. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM tonight at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Michael's School Endowment Fund, 704 St. Michael's Lane, Gastonia, NC 28052.

My deepest sympathy and promised prayers to the family of James P. Cherry. HE was a dear friend to me and a great supporter of the Sisters of Mercy. HE is with his beloved Eunice. I shall always remember them and hope they will intercede for me. I am priveleged to have know them.
