James Dalby Obituary

James Richard Dalby

September 24, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - James Richard "Old Dog" Dalby, 75, of Charlotte, NC passed away on September 24, 2024 with his loving wife Peggy by his side at Atrium Health in Charlotte.

Richard was born February 1, 1949 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Roanoke, VA to Howard "Bud" Dalby and Mary Andrews Dalby.

After graduation from Guilford College, Richard joined the army. Following his service he became a commercial fisherman, then later an entrepreneur, and built a successful contracting company.

Richard had an affinity for golf, he loved to laugh and tell stories, and he valued his friendships dearly. He enjoyed spending time at Grassy Creek Farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains and entertaining. He especially enjoyed the times he was able to cook barbecue and crawfish for all his friends and family. He was a loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Peggy Jean Rayburn Dalby, son Hunter Dalby and his wife Meredith Whitacre, sister Ann Dalby Cole, as well as the members of his fabulous fraternity "The Friends of the Collar".

Two individuals have already received the gift of sight thanks to Richard's status as an organ donor.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Toys for Tots, American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice in Richard's name. Tribute & Tallent Funeral Service is assisting the family of Mr. Dalby.

So sad to hear of Richard's passing. All the words about Richard doesn't come close to the man himself, he was a true gentleman. Condolences to Peg and the family.

Richard and I were in Boy Scout Troop 54 in Salem, Va together. We also were at Andrew Lewis Hi School together.
He was a gentleman and mostly quiet person with a great sense of humor. I was glad to see him at many of our ALHS 5 year reunions.
He maintained many friends from our area as he lived throughout the years. He was always smiling and will be remembered.
