James Lewis Obituary

James Junior Lewis, 76, passed away on October 30, 2017, at his home in Mint Hill, NC, with his family by his side. Born in Fort Morgan, CO, on May 31, 1941, he was the son of the late Fred and Alta Smith Lewis. As a young man, James proudly served in the Armed Forces achieving the rank of Specialist E-4. While serving his country, he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and a truck driver. He also spent several years serving in the National Guard. It was during his service that James met Mary, sweeping her off her feet after exchanging letters and visiting one another. They later married in 1962, creating an everlasting bond and serving as the foundation of their family. He imparted life values and countless lessons throughout his family, even down to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He dutifully worked for the City of Charlotte, retiring after twenty-five years. James was also an avid collector of hats and patriotic memorabilia. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and his legacy of "Doing right by others and showing respect" will live on throughout the family. James is survived by his wife and best friend of 55 years, Mary Wilson Lewis and their four children: Nancy Ann Lewis (Bobby Hardee) of Mullins, SC; Jerry Junior Lewis of Mint Hill, NC; Larry James Lewis (Regina Lewis) of Charlotte, NC; and Opal Lewis Potter (Chris Potter) of Midland, NC. He is also survived by five siblings: William Donald Lewis of Denver, CO; Mary Leota Higgins of Lafayette, CO; Jerry Ralph Lewis of Greeley, CO; Albert Joseph Lewis of Denver, CO; and Judith Ann Frederickson of Denver, CO; seven grandchildren: Robert Horne, Kimberly Kusiak (Pete), Dustin Lewis, Jason Lewis, David Patton, Karen Kelley (Blade) and Jenna Lewis; and four great grandchildren: Jonah, Penelope, Rosey and Timothy. James is further survived by numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings: Viola Margaret Lewis and David Harry Lewis. James will be brought home to rest where all are invited to his viewing service from 6 to 9 pm on Thursday, November 2, at 6910 Oak Hill Road in Mint Hill. On Friday, a funeral service led by Pastor Rob Mariucci will take place at 2 pm at Wilson Grove Baptist Church, 6624 Wilgrove Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill. Following the service, James will be taken in procession to his final place of earthly rest at Sunset Memory Gardens where a final military tribute will also be rendered. James' family has given the family of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home the privilege of caring for them.
