Mr. McIlwain, 61, of Charlotte, departed this life into eternal rest on June 27, 2005 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was the son of the late Mr. Ferry and Ruth B. McIlwain, and was born in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC, on May 31, 1944.
Funeral service is 1:00 PM Friday at Greater Gethsemane AME Zion Church, 531 Campus Street, with Rev. Calvin L. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, at the church.
James was a graduate of West Charlotte High School, Class of 1962. He continued his education and graduated from Johnson C. Smith University, Class of 1966, with a B.S. Degree in Biology. James was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He was a former employee of Greyhound Bus Lines for 20 years, and retired as a telephone information specialist.
He leaves to forever cherish his memories, his son, Mr. Rico McIlwain (Bridgett) of Charlotte; daughter, Ms. Mona McIlwain of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Rayana, Brianna, and Rico, Jr.; brother, Ferry McIlwain, Jr.; sister, Mrs. Joe Ann Freeman (Freddie); nephews, Ferry McIlwain, III, and Johnny McIlwain; niece, Pamela McIlwain; aunts, Verona Vaughn and Bernice Ervin; and a host of cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Long and Son Mortuary Service is serving the McIlwain family.
