Jeff Byrd Obituary

Jeff Byrd
WINSTON-SALEM -- Mr. Byrd, 60, a man best known by family, friends and professional colleagues for his visionary leadership, community service and generosity, died on Sunday morning, October 17, 2010. At the time of his death, he was at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in the company of his immediate family.
He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on December 10, 1949 to the late Elizabeth Gabriel Byrd and Herbert Carlton Byrd. In 1974, he made what he describes as the best decision of his life when he married Claudia Holder Byrd. His family was the most important group of people in his life. Jeff loved his daughter, Belton Caldwell and her husband Jerry; his son, Christian Byrd and his wife Amy; his sister, Johanna Byrd Davis and her husband John; his brother, Michael Carlton Byrd and his wife Deb; his seven grandchildren, Ashton, Weston and Reeves Byrd, and Caleb, Emma, Bella and Lila Caldwell; his nieces and nephews and the Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway family.
An avid fan of all sports, Jeff played football for Wake Forest and supported the Demon Deacons through good and bad times. His love of competition never waned and he participated in rec league basketball and softball games alongside his co-workers and friends through 2009. Jeff received his B.A. degree in history and politics from Wake Forest University in 1972.
Following in his father's footsteps, Jeff began his career as a sportswriter at the Winston-Salem Journal. It wasn't long until his potential was recognized and he was hired by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in their sports marketing department. Jeff was instrumental in the growth of motorsports in the United States from the beginnings of the Winston Cup Series in the early seventies, to the development and support of facilities across the county. His relationships and character were essential to the growth and success of many initiatives, teams, and drivers throughout his career. Jeff was involved in the development and implementation of a multitude of sports and event marketing programs across the sports spectrum-especially impacting NHRA and NASCAR-before ultimately ascending to the role of vice president of business development.
In 1996, Jeff brought his unique talents and his young family to Tennessee when he accepted the opportunity presented by O. Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports, to become Vice President and General Manager of Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway. Jeff was named President and General Manager in 2002. Jeff led Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway through tremendous growth and was instrumental in establishing Bristol's place as the premiere motorsports facility in the country.
Jeff's faith was the foundation on which he based all of his life decisions and relationships. He believed that everything is part of God's plan and that God has a plan for everyone. No matter what adversity might arise, Jeff believed that trusting in God would show the way. Jeff never met a stranger and every new conversation resulted in a long-lasting friendship
Jeff's impact on the Tri-Cities community cannot be adequately measured. He was a much-sought-after board member and was extremely active in numerous civic and charitable organizations, as well as his church, First Presbyterian in Kingsport, where he was an elder. Jeff and his wife Claudia organized and spearheaded the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children' Charities, a non-profit agency dedicated to aiding children in need in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. He served as President of United Way of Bristol, NETWORKS - Sullivan County Partnership, the Bristol Noon Rotary Club and the King College Board of Trustees. He also served on the boards of the Regional Alliance for Economic Development, First Tennessee Bank Advisory Board, Wellmont Health System, the East Tennessee State University Roan Scholars Program, Kingsport Community Foundation, Junior Achievement, and countless others.
A number of organizations bestowed honors upon Jeff for his contributions and achievements. Most notably, he received the Milligan College Leaders in Christian Service Award, was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame and was named a 'Friend of Education' by the Tennessee Education Association. Many other awards were bestowed throughout his life and career.
Jeff's family invites his friends to join them in celebrating his life at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, October 20, 2010 at Grace Fellowship Church, 2314 South Greenwood Drive, Johnson City, Tennessee with Dr. Greg Jordan and Dr. David Cagle officiating. A community appreciation service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning, October 21, 2010 in the infield at Bristol Motor Speedway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Jeff Byrd Foundation, c/o Kingsport Community Foundation, 625 Market Street, Suite 1400, Knoxville, TN 37902.
Donations may also be made through the website at www.easttennesseefoundation.org.
The family sincerely thanks the staff of Wellmont Health System for their loving care.
Condolences and memories may be shared with the family and viewed by visiting www.Oakley-Cook.com. Arrangements especially for Jeff and his family have been made through Oakley-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory.

Jeff understood racing and he understood people. I sure miss going to the drags and talking to Jeff in suite 516. I attended every year from 1999 - 2011 and always looked forward to seeing everyone at Bristol. As Jeff would always say: " same time next year." What a guy. I really miss him.

Last night I made a list of people I had not talked to for a long time and wanted to reach out to them and Jeff was on that list. I can't tell you how shocked I was to learn that Jeff had passed today.
I was blessed to have associated with Jeff over the years when he was with RJR and I have fond memories of our times together. There is an empty feeling in me heart today. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
God Bless.

My deepest condolences. May your memories bring you a measure of comfort at this time of great sorrow. And may you continue to gain strength and peace from the promises found in God"s Word the Bible. (Daniel 12:2)

Jeff was the joy and spirit of BMS. I had the pleasure of meeting him and Claudia and Claudia's wonderful parents while working with the Children Charities, Eastman Motorsports Club auctions. They were a family that were very close, but their arms were also open for someone else to join in their family, including each and every race fan. BMS will never be the same without Jeff. I always looked forward to his letters in the BMS magazine that was sent out to ticket holders. He always wanted the "FANS" to have the best experience of their life while at BMS, and to make sure that happened, he even included his cell phone in the letters in case you had a need while visiting BMS. He was dedicated to his family and to his job. Jeff will be greatly missed by his family, and by his BMS race fan family. May God comfort Claudia and his entire family during this terrible loss.

I was saddened to hear Jeff had passed away. He was a smart and funny man and a great friend who helped me get a job with RJR when my life was a struggle and I really needed it. It has been years since I saw him, but it always did my heart good to hear what he had accomplished. Jeff is a guy you never replace. You just hope you can work a little of his magic back into the world a live each day a little richer for knowing him. My thoughts and prayers are with Claudia and the whole family. God Bless.

During the fall of 2002, Jeff Byrd graciously invited Sullivan East High School to hold classes at the speedway. We will forever be grateful for everything he did for us during our time at the track. It was obvious that he truly cared about the students. Our community has lost one of its finest.

I knew Jeff since he became a part of the NHRA family and he became a really good friend to both my late husband Bob and myself. I have thought about him so much and kept him in my prayers during his illness. He will be missed by lots and lots of drag racing people.
My condolences go out to his family.
He is now in God's hands and out of all of his pain and suffering. God Bless. Eileen Daniels, NHRA

May God bless you and your family. My prayers and deepest condolences are with you. Shall the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. Shall your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together that bring you comfort as you celebrate a life well lived. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
God does have a plan...It's just kind of hard to read the blueprints through the tears sometimes. Our loved ones that are gone on to Heaven are in the LORD’s hand now and we will hold them close within our hearts. They will always be alive in our hearts and there they will remain, to walk with us throughout our lives, until we meet again. Time may pass and fade away, but memories of them will always stay. Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal....... Love leaves a memory no one can steal. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a wonderful treasure. Their life here on earth was a blessing, they are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.

I thought you might enjoy this poem:

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there are no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you that entire God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

For 20 years I took picturesof pre race cermonies. my most memorable experience was one time things got a little behind schedule, Jeff got on stage and directed his people to rush all of us off track, his last words of instructions were"but be nice to them." This was Jeff Byrd. He will be missed. Jerry Greene

But he will always be a part of all the Wonderful memories that will live forever in your heart. May knowing that others care be a comfort to you at this difficult time. May God keep you safe in his loving arms.

A few years ago, a collection of combat airman from the Vietnam "conflict" gathered in Bristol to reminisce and fellowship. Among the activities planned by Paul Spangler was a visit to Bristol Speedway for a day of racing courtesy of Jeff. We enjoyed that day and the generous hospitality of Jeff's skybox and service. Jeff acknowledged our presence and honored our service with recognition at the track. Hospitality marks one measure of a good person's character. Jeff clearly had that one well set and, by comments here, he had a full measure of other highly admirable character traits. Thanks again, Jeff, and deepest condolences to those who loved and knew him and enjoyed his vigorous living. If there's not been any rubber burning or fuel stinging nostrils in heaven during the joy of great motor racing, I'm betting a new project is freshly under way. God bless Jeff and all who grieve the ending of a very well lived life.

Such a wonderful person with many memories of the whole family and BMS family. I had dealt with Jeff many times when I did Non-Profitt fundraisers for the Crumley House for the Traumatic Brain Injured. And he always gave from his heart. A truley dedicated man to this area. And his wife just follows in his footsteps. God Bless to all of you and the BMS employees for the loss of a most wonderful boss and friend. Jeff, you will be greatly missed.

One yr when my parking passes were late i had called the BMS # after business hrs. I pushed enough buttons to get to the empoyee phone directory. When Jeff's # came up i pressed it. ( what the heck )To my surprise i was greeted with a quick hello. i explained my concern, he commented that it was to late for mail to reach ontario canada. I asked how he new i was from canada, he replied how do you know i'm from north carolina. I explained to him that i did not have a accent he did. When he quit laughing he passed me through to the person in charge voice mail. He explained he needed to go as he had a fundraiser to attend, apologized for cutting me short. Two more times over the yrs i called his # just to chew the fat. He gave me a few minutes of his time, listened to my concerns, and remebered who i was. This is not that hard as my 9 yr old daughter is named Bristol. Please accept my familys prayers at your time of sorrow. Jim Janet Bristol Blackstock

To the Byrd Family:
One of my fondest memories when racing my own Funny Car operation during the Winston era...was Jeff Byrd's exhuberant "guest tour" invasions of our pit area. No matter your stature (rich or poor), Jeff knew NO bounderies for his being personable, caring and just plain FUN to be around! With his always bringing BIG grins and joy to everyone around...there's no doubt the Byrd Family has a lifetime of joyous, loving and grinning memories to look back on. My Prayer's for your healing and celebrating his blessed Soul,

Dynamic and friendly are words that will always remind me of Jeff. He was a wonderful leader and I thought so much of Jeff's family. He lead the way for me to receive an award while I worked with him at RJR/SME. I will never forget his enthusiam and encouraging ways. We had some great fun as an SME family playing softball, going bowling at lunch, and doing fun things. Jeff was the one who usually got it all together. Bye Jeff and thanks for all the great times! God bless all your family and friends as they deal with the loss.

From the few short years I knew Jeff what impressed me most was his ability to connect with people. If he met you once, he knew your name forever. He was very engaging, very friendly, and he seemed loved by everyone who worked with him at BMS. That speaks volumes about the kind of person Jeff was. I know he will be missed by his friends, co-workers, and family. The city of Bristol will miss his great mind for business, he contributions to our community were numerous, and at many times unspoken.

I have missed him during my visits to BMS and glad I had the opportunity to talk to him the last time I was there. Jeff, God bless, and make your track in heaven as exciting as the one you made in Bristol!

JEFF WAS A GREAT LEADER IN OUR RACING COMMUNITY. HE KNEW KNOW STRANGER, ALWAYS READY TO LEND A HAND. WORDS CANT MEASURE HIS KINDNESS, IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HAVE WORKED FOR HIM. JEFF WILL BE TRUELY MISSED! OUR LOVE AND PRAYERS TO CHRISTIAN AND HIS FAMILY.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel in my heart at the loss of Jeff. He was a wonderful, kind Christian man who will be missed by so many people. I had the privelge of working with Jeff at RJR in the Sports Marketing Department. He was one of the first ones to interview me for the position. He made what is usually a somewhat stressful situation much more comfortable, and I got the job!

To Claudia, Belton and Christian and their families, please know you are in my prayers. May our merciful Lord and Savior wrap His loving arms around you in comfort. I lost my father just a little over a year ago and know all too well the grief you are feeling. I pray that you will receive peace and joy in the wonderful memories that are etched in your hearts and minds. I smile when I think of J Byrd, T Wayne and Ralph Seagraves up there in Heaven teaching God all about the wonderful world of racing. Who knows I bet he gave HIM an all access pit pass!

Love and Prayers,

Claudia, you are in my families prayers. Jeff will be missed by friends and family alike. Being one of Grandma Reba's "adopted" ones, I got to be both. Jeff told me he always had time for me, especially when it came to advise. "He told me that bigger isn't always better, it is the genuine enthusiasm and excitement you give back that makes a great place for fans." The thing was, he knew how to be big, ethusisastic and exciting...and his impact on others will go on forever. ThanX Jeff, you will be missed!!!

I have know Jeff ever since I was a little kid hanging around the races. All the years in and around racing and cars Jeff always had time for me. This all started through friends and the fact he liked Steeler football way back when or at least he made us northerners believe he did. Though I had not seen Jeff in sometime we would stay in touch and he always would be concerned how the family was doing. Soeone I will always think of as a freind. Claudia and the kids are just as great and they are peas in a pod. Stay strong and know that Jeff is loved by many.

Jeff Byrd's positive influence on every aspect of motorsports he touched goes far beyond BMS. A true gentleman and a great friend to so very many people, Jeff was the kind of person the rest of us would like to be.

I was not fortunate to know Mr. Byrd and his family. I did know who he was if I heard his name mentioned, but I must admit that during the trbute in this morrnings news with Josh I cried when we were all told of the many, many things he and his family had done for children. What a great man he was. How generous and caring for the areas children. No doubt those who knew him were made better by knowing him. He made the world a better place. My deepest, truest sympathy goes out to all that knew him and espescially to his family. Heaven is surely a better place with Mr. Byrd and no doubt he is watching over children there. P. Our family was deeply saddened by the news of Jeff Byrd's passing. Jeff was a friend of Nascar, Drag Racing and our family. I remember a few years back Tom Jr. calling me from Jeff's office at Bristol Motor Speedway and told me he had been visiting with Jeff for the past half hour and WHAT a nice person Jeff was. Just small talk, but our son was impressed that Jeff who was a VERY busy man, would take a few minutes to talk about drag racing with him.

I didn't know Jeff as well as my kids, I remember him well from his days at R.J. Renyolds and NHRA, but I'm lucky enough to recently meet and become friends with his son Christian Byrd, the executive director and general manager of zMAX Dragway. I have ALWAYS said: "Children ARE nothing but a reflection of their parents" so judging from the nice young man Christian is, Jeff MUST of been one FINE person!

Jeff will be deeply missed by all of racing and this family.

Jeff was truly a people person. We felt he was our friend from the moment we met him. Once he met you he didn't forget you. We happened into a deli in 2009...hadn't seen him in a couple years, and he was the first to speak to us and continue on as if we were continuing our previous conversations. He was such a part of the Bristol Experience. We will truly miss him. Jack & Janet McQueeney, (Skaneateles, NY)

My heart hurts for all the people, including myself, who will be left with a void knowing Jeff is no longer with us. He taught me a lot and always had a supportive word for me. Working around him for years and being a part of the BMS team will be a memory and a learning experience I carry with me forever. I am so sorry for your loss, Claudia, Belton, and the WHOLE rest of the family...My prayers are with you all.
