John Bass Obituary

John Elbert Bass, Jr., 72, of Waxhaw, NC, formerly of Charlotte, died on March 4, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Bass was born on November 21, 1929 in Charlotte, NC. He received a Naval ROTC scholarship to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology. After receiving his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, he served as an engineering officer in the US Navy. Mr. Bass spent over 40 years in the fluidpower industry as a design engineer and salesman.
Mr. Bass was very active with his children in the YMCA Indian Guides Program, as well as AAU competitive swimming. Mr. Bass was awarded three US patents for his hydraulic pump designs. He was a branch manager of Cross Sales and Engineering and was founder and President of Southern Hydraulic and Pneumatic Sales, from which he retired in 2001. Mr. Bass spent the last two decades of his life designing and building a geothermal/passive solar house, which he completed in 2001. Mr. Bass died at his home peacefully.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary Beatty Bass and John Elbert Bass, Sr. of Charlotte, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Lewis Bass; his daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and Steve Robertson of Roanoke, Virginia and Carolyn and Jeff Taylor of Cornelius, NC; his sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Debbie Bass of Brooklyn, NY and Eric and Leigh Anne Bass of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Kristin and Anna Robertson and Camille and Jody Taylor.
Visitation of family and friends will be held at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Wednesday, March 6, 2002 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Sharon Memorial Park. Mr. Bass's family will conduct the service which will include military honors. The family would like to share its sincerest gratitude to the care given by Hospice of Union County.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, NC 28110 or to Myers Park Baptist Church, through the weekday school, 1931 Selwyn Avenue, P.O. Box 6006, Charlotte, NC 28207-0001 (where Mrs. Bass is a pre-school teacher).
Harry & Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Bass.
