John Haley Obituary

John Devin Haley
September 22, 1979 - May 22, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - John Devin Haley, 41, passed away on Saturday May 22, 2021 after fighting a courageous battle with addiction and mental health.
Devin was born on September 22, 1979 in Greenwich, Connecticut to Mr. & Mrs. Edward Haley. Devin believed Jesus lived to bring eternal life to all and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family until they are reunited again. They are comforted by knowing Devin's past few years were filled with many personal accomplishments in life. Like many, the isolation of Covid-19 took a toll on Devin and his recovery. He will be remembered for his valiant effort to fight an unrelenting disease that held him back from his potential.
Devin had many years of success. Devin attended boarding school at Woodberry Forest, graduating cum laude, before going on to attend the University of Virginia also graduating cum laude with a degree in business. He was a member of Pi Kaapa Alpha fraternity and was among the very few chosen to live on the lawn. Upon graduation Devin returned to Charlotte, North Carolina where he began his career at Bank of America and Wells Fargo working in the financial markets.
Those who knew Devin early in life knew he loved the outdoors and fly-fishing and hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains. Devin's family remembers his sweetness and kindness to others. His sense of humor and love of family could not be mistaken.
Devin is survived by his parents Edward and Patricia Haley; older brother Ted Haley, Jr. and sister-in-law, Suzanne Haley; younger brother Jamie Haley; and two nieces, Camilla Haley and Sloane Haley, who both adored their uncle Devin.
A private Mass for family will be held on Wednesday, May 26th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Deepest condolences to the entire Haley Family.

Way too young and too soon, but I can speak to 25+ years of great friendship, adventures, comedy and a few fish caught along the way. It started on the Merriebrook/Mianus River in Greenwich with Stu and Pace; Stripers at American Yacht Club; the Creel on the Ausable River; bass fishing private ponds in Charlottesville with Teddy’s old jon boat tied to the roof of my Jeep; the streams around the cabin in NC; the Green River in Utah; that beast of a Bonefish in Miami; the list goes on, as do the amazing memories.

You called me Bilge - I don’t know why; I’m not sure anyone knows why - but it stuck!

You were an amazing friend and you brought together a broader group of people who will forever be grateful for your friendship, your spontaneity and your passion for adventure and a good time.

You’ll be greatly missed. Tight lines, Devo.

I just learned of Devin today. I did not know him, but his story was told to me by a young 47 y.o. Man from CPI, who was at my home to do some repairs. He told me that Devin had called on him regarding a roof replacement. Devin had been right the roof needed to be replaced and was replaced by Devin’s Company. This young man, was very pleased with the workmanship. Devin stopped by to chat with this young man and find out if he was pleased. The young man then saw the story in the Charlotte Observer about Devin and recognized his picture. I must say that I was so touched with how affected this young man was as he told me the story and also touched by the terrible loss Devin’s family has suffered.
At 81 and a mother and grandmother, my heart is crushed for your terrible loss. As I attend Mass daily at our Lady of Grace, I will be praying for Devin’s soul in the Devine Mercy Praises and our daily rosary before Mass. I will also be asking for God’s mercy for you his family as you go through this time of grieving. Please know that God loves you. May you be lovingly supported by Jesus, Mary and Joseph. ~

Devin 2 years ago arranged to have a new roof put on our home. The only thing more beautiful then our roof is his heart. He is a kind person, he will be missed

Devin will always be remembered for the incredible conversations we shared about the paths in life taken. Our first conversation at Yafo over a meal about God and the intervention of God to redirect our paths in life shaped our friendship to always have depth and meaningful moments. I love you my dear friend and pray for your peace.
