John Lucas Obituary

John Winston Lucas
Rev. Lucas, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church, 8801 Park Road, on Friday, December 16 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Augustus Succop and the Rev. Betsy Williamson officiating. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the memorial service.
John Lucas was born May 12, 1923 in Louisville, Kentucky, son of the late Vernon B. Lucas and Verne S. Lucas. He attended Carson-Newman College and graduated from Georgetown College in 1946. He was a member of 'Who's Who in Colleges and Universities.' John graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953. After serving with Baptist churches in Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina, he retired in 1986 from the First Baptist Church, Matthews, NC. In retirement, he worked in the real estate field for a number of years. He then served as interim pastor for a number of congregations, a ministry he concluded at the Benton Heights Baptist Church, Monroe, NC, in September 2001.
A commercial artist all his life, he used his talent in the many churches with whom he served. Recently, he had taken up his art work in retirement, bringing him many hours of enjoyment.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Broome Lucas, of Charlotte, and his son, the Rev. Dr. Stephen W. Lucas, wife Carol, and their daughter Jessie, of LaGrange, Illinois.
The family wishes to thank the Jim Wylie Sunday School Class at Providence Baptist Church and Liberty Hospice Group at Liberty Nursing and Rehab for their caring and compassionate care.
Memorials may be made to the Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 8801 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210-7605.
