Joni McGraw Obituary
CONCORD -- Mrs. McGraw, age 46, died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the Bob & Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC.
She was born September 4, 1962 in Portsmouth, VA, the daughter of Shirley Haggard Webb and the late Edward J. Webb.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jon M. Steinkamp, Jr.; her maternal grandparents, Raymond and Jean Haggard who had lived in Cincinnati, OH; and her paternal grandparents, Charles and Hildrade Webb who lived in Lerona, WV.
In addition to her mother, left to cherish her memory, are her beloved husband, James R. McGraw; daughter, Carolann Michelle McGraw of Concord, NC; and son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Chan Suk Savage of Seoul, Korea; sister, Kelley Jama and family of Columbia, MD; and several brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Joni graduated from Concord University in Athens, WV with a B.A. in Education, and from Marshall University with an M.A. in Education. She was well loved by not only her students but her fellow educators where she taught in the public school system in Mercer County, West Virginia and Cabarrus County Schools for 26 years.
She touched many lives and will be missed by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis, NC. Her body will then be taken to Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, WV for the family to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2009. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Princeton, WV. Burial will follow at Athens Cemetery, Athens, WV.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to either the Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or Locks of Love, 234 Southern Blvd., West Palm Beach, FL 330405.

Mrs. McGraw was my fifth grade teacher. I just graduated high school and wanted to go back and tell Mrs. McGraw thank you, she made a big impact on me. I remember on the last day of school that year she gave me a huge hug and told me how proud she was and to "focus on my math". She was so funny and nice. I really am so sad to hear of her passing. She was too good to go. My condolences to the family.

Well mrs mcgraw was my fifth grade teacher.I miss her very much .Now i am in sixth grade and i think about her all the time. I talk to her when i pray. It hurts all of her students loved her and we still do and when i graduate from high school and go to college i will look yup to her and say thank you.I love you joni lynn savage mccraw i always did and i always will.

I was very sad to hear of Joni's death. My prayers go out to her husband and children, her mother and her father, Jon Steinkamp. I am sorry I did not stay in touch with the family after Jon Jr's death. Joni was my niece, but she was more like a little sister. We lived down the street from her mother and father in Norfolk, Virginia and she was at our house all the time playing with my little sister, Alice. Alice and Joni are the same age. Then I got married and moved away. I am sorry that years and distance separated me from my niece.

I was devasted to learn of Joni's death. It has been many years since I saw Joni but she has never been far my thoughts through out the years. From all the messages left here I can see that Joni was a fantastic woman, mother and teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with you, her family and her father, Jon Steinkamp.

Shirley and family, I send you my prayers at such a great loss for you, first John and now Joni. I've never been through this but I've always thought that to loose a child would be worse than anything that could happen to a mother. I also know the Lord will help us if we just trust him. Dear Shirley and family, I was really shocked to hear about Joni's death. I've been meaning to call you, Shirley, for the last couple of weeks. I know that the hurt must be very deep since you loved your daughter so very much. I'm so very sorry that you've had to go through this suffering again with the loss of Joni after losing Ed and Jon. I can't really comprehend your sadness in losing both of your children so early in their lives, especially since they were a blessing to so many, many people! We will always cherish their memory. I really appreciated knowing Joni and I'm so sad that her life was far too short. Dave and I send our love and we will hold you in our thoughts and prayers.
