Joseph Albright Obituary

Joseph L. Albright, Jr., M.D.
June 19, 1956 - July 30, 2022
Greensboro, North Carolina - Dr. Joseph Lindsay Albright, Jr., 66, of Greensboro passed away on July 30, 2022.
An 11 a.m. memorial service will be held Saturday, August 6, 2022 in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC 27401. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the church.
Dr. Albright was born in Greensboro to Joseph L. Albright, Sr. and Sarah A. Albright. Educated in the Greensboro City Schools, Joe graduated from Grimsley High School ('74) and was always a proud Whirlie. He maintained many lifelong friendships from his time in Greensboro. Dr. Albright was awarded the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated with a degree in Biology. Through the Morehead Foundation, he experienced many summer adventures, culminating with a summer of underwater ecology research on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. He was also a member of Alpha Sigma chapter of Chi Psi.
He stayed at UNC Chapel Hill for medical school, followed by residency in Hartford, CT and then began his medical practice in Emergency Medicine in northern Virginia and Maryland. After several years, he transitioned to hospitalist and critical care work, and relocated to Charlotte, NC. The highlight of his medical career was the relationships he built with patients and staff upon establishing Albright Internal Medicine in South Charlotte. He was a premier diagnostician able to listen fully, truly hear patient concerns, and deftly manage their care, until he was disabled with a stroke in 2011.
While medicine was a considerable part of Joe's life, his ability to connect deeply with anyone was enhanced by insatiable curiosity, penchant for humor, and lifelong pursuit of a multitude of other passions. He was a voracious reader of all things history but was particularly fond of reading about the Civil War and World War II. He loved art/art history, music, working outdoors, travel, and a great meal with fine wine; but most importantly he was an incomparable conversationalist who loved to entertain and be entertained by his friends and family.
He is survived by his children Lindsay Albright (Arielle) of Los Angeles, CA, Mary Madison Durst (Nick) of New York, and Anna Albright of Charlotte, as well as his mother Sarah Albright, sisters Allison Albright and Sally Greene of Charlotte, NC, and brother Jim Albright (Kelly). He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Dr. Leigh Allen (Matt) of Minneapolis, MN, Will Albright (Kailyn) of Atlanta, GA, Sarah Albright, and Jack Albright of Raleigh NC. He is predeceased by his father, Joseph Albright, Sr., grandparents J. Mack/Bessie Albright and Lowry/Mary Allison.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to AuthoraCare Collective, formerly Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405 (or online at authoracare.org/give) or the Morehead-Cain Scholarship Fund, P.O. Dr. Albright was simply the best. Thats it. Now I have these impossible standards to which I expect my Doctor to live up to. I know that he generally cared about me and my health. So much so, that when I relocated in 2006 to Raleigh NC (3 hours door to door), I continued to trek back down to Charlotte for my regular checkups and any other problems in the interim. My good friend Ashley Davis, grew very fond of him, as well. He was our friend, and we were both hit very hard in 2011 with news of his stroke. Condolences to his family. What a great man.

Sincere condolences to his children and extended family. I worked with him at Hartford Hospital as an internal medical and he was a third year supervising resident (1984). He had an exceptional intellect, with humor always a half beat away. He told me about his Morehead studies on the Great Barrier Reef and setting up underwater grid study areas. He could talk on many topics and was so comfortable to hang out with. There was often an aloofness in the relationship between the older, experienced residents and the unexperienced interns- but not with Joe. I'd gone to U.Va. and along with a third resident were the southern doctor crew and being in Connecticut, took some ribbing about it from the other doctors and the nurses. It was good natured. Joe thought it was funny too. He was clearly one of the top residents in the program and I suspect always worked at the top of his game.
