Joseph "Jay" Barsin
July 13, 1941 - April 23, 2025
Charlotte, North Carolina - Jay passed away on April 23rd, 2025 at the age of 83, in comfort and with family by his side.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York to Joseph and Florence Barsin, Jay had an active adolescence in the Catholic Youth Organization, scouting, delivering the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper and as a Lifeguard at Breezy Point.
From an early age, Jay took an interest in math and sciences. He would reminisce about his first flight in a WWII vintage plane as a scout, taking off from Floyd Bennett Field and helping his father and brother-in-law Tom Fogarty build their bungalow at Breezy Pt.
Jay attended Midwood High School with a focus on pre-Engineering and then S.U.N.Y. Maritime College, earning a B.S in Marine Engineering and Third Engineer License from the USCG. Later in his career, Jay returned to Northeastern University to obtain an Executive MBA.
Jay wed his longtime sweetheart, Carol Perkin, on October 9th, 1965 and would embark on a 60-year marriage and global adventure. As a field service engineer for Babcock & Wilcox (B & W), Jay's assignments would lead the newlyweds to Spain, India, Thailand, back to the US, and finally settling in Italy.
During these early years, Jay and Carol had two sons, Joseph III and Scott, and would live in Arrenzano, Italy until 1975, when the family moved back to Ohio. Jay's career at B & W was progressing into senior management and his sons were entering elementary school in Akron.
Following the years aboard, Jay and Carol maintained and fostered new, lifelong friendships with many of their colleagues and neighbors. They took an active role in various social and professional organizations from the Akron Ski Club to ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers - Fellow and Chairman) and TAPPI (Tech Assoc. of the Pulp & Paper Industry – Engineering Chairman) to name a few.
Jay's love of engineering and expertise in combustion devices lead to his patents in boiler design and air pollution control. He would be recognized for his achievements and leadership by ASME with the George Westinghouse Silver Medal, TAPPI's Certificate of Recognition and Fellowship and other notable awards from within his Industry.
Engineering aside, Jay had an incredible zest for life. He was an avid sailor and skier, golfed in the office league and appreciated cultural performances from ballet and opera to musicals, symphonies and museums.
Joseph is survived by his sons Joseph III and Scott, daughter-in-law Eva, son-in-law John Foss, grandsons Robert and James Barsin and Sister-in-Law Barbara Perkin Ritz. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and their extended families whom he loved.
On June 7th, 2025 at 11:00 there will be a memorial celebration for Jay and Carol at the Chapel in Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, with a reception afterward.
