NEW LONDON -- Mr. Nestor, age 90 of 333 Porters Glen, New London, formerly of Honolulu, Hawaii passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Albemarle, NC.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Joe lived in Hawaii for 40 years from 1963-2003. He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Hawaii.
He was a WWII Captain, U.S. Army Air Corps; China, Burma, India Theater. He served with distinction and was awarded three Campaign stars and the Bronze Star Medal of Honor. He then joined the FAA in Washington DC as Executive Officer, Research Requirement Division, Aviation Medical Service. He served at the Aeronautical Center, Oklahoma City prior to being selected to serve in the FAA's Pacific-Asia Regional Headquarters. Joe was responsible for air safety and promotion of aviation for a geographic area that covered 24 million square miles from as far west as Bangladesh and which included all the Pacific and Asian countries and the People's Republic of China. He received two Presidential awards during his service as a Senior Executive of the United States of America for contributions which led to a greater economy and improvement in government operations. He also received a Guardian of the Pacific award from the 14th Coast Guard District. Joe retired in 1980 as Deputy Director, Pacific Asia Region, Federal Aviation Administration.
Joe was the Founder of the Federal Day in Hawaii; a continuing annual program recognizing Federal Employees and Federal Government-Community relationships. He was a member of The American Legion, Hawaii Post No 1, Member and Committee Chairman Aloha United Way, and was on the Board of Directors, Science Information Exchange, Washington, DC. Joe was also a Real Estate Broker in Hawaii, Nebraska, Florida, Oklahoma, and Maryland.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Rita Mary Nestor, son Robert Joseph of Houston, TX and San Diego, Ca., daughter Carol Nestor Sullivan and son-in-law Larry of New London, NC.; brother James Nestor of Cleveland, OH, sister, Betty Patty of Cleveland, OH; brother, Thomas Nestor of Cincinnati, OH.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Aloysisus B. Nestor, and Margaret Malone Nestor, brothers and sisters, Jack Nestor, Margie Bader, Al Nestor, and Rita Nestor.
Joe's devotion as a husband and his love as a father, father-in-law, son, brother, uncle, and cousin will forever be remembered. Joe touched the hearts of many and he will be missed by the numerous friends he made over the years. His dedication at work and his love for his country made the world a better place.
Funeral services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, in Washington, DC., with full military honors. Joe's cousin, Father Thomas E. Chambers, C.S.C, Ph.D.,L.P.C. of New Orleans, will officiate.
