Joseph Thompson Obituary

Joseph Walter Thompson, Jr., 76, of Charlotte, NC, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at The Carriage Club of Charlotte. A celebration of Joe's life will be held in the sanctuary for family and friends on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. A private interment will be held for the family.
Mr. Thompson was born in Stanly County on July 29, 1926 and was the only son of the late Joseph Walter Thompson, Sr. and Connie Goodman Thompson. He lived in New London, NC, graduated from New London High School, attended Pfeiffer University and Saint Olaf College. He served in the US Naval Air Corps from 1945-1946. On February 16, 1947, he married the former Phyllis Anne Beck of Badin, NC, and they resided in Charlotte, and, for a brief period, in New Mexico and Salisbury.
Joe, as he was known to all his friends, was an energetic salesman for the major part of his working career. He started Randolph Realty and later he became co-owner of two construction companies, Kirby-Thompson Construction and Gettys-Thompson Construction. He made countless friends throughout his 30-year career of selling, buying and building custom housing. He was an honest, caring and reputable builder and professional. Joe was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church. He had a passion for antique collecting and visited many museums and auctions throughout the United States. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was an avid reader.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of fifty three years, Phyllis, and four beloved children, Joseph W. Thompson, III and Jeffrey D. Thompson, both of Charlotte, Anne Beck Thompson Stovall of Pinehurst and Jane Avery Thompson Goldenberg of Orlando, FL. Also surviving are his six much-loved grandchildren, Joseph W. Thompson, IV, Kathryn Keller Thompson, Sarah Sloan Thompson, Emily Beck Thompson, Jonathan Matthew Goldenberg, Rachel Anne Goldenberg, as well as one sister, Betty Thompson Holt of Albemarle, five nieces and two nephews. Other survivors include the spouses of his children, Jo W. Thompson, Laurel L. Thompson, James Stovall, and Steven Goldenberg.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to those who had been so supportive and instrumental in caring for Mr. Thompson during the last two years including Dr. Ann Forshag, the staff at Carriage Club of Charlotte, and Hospice at Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be sent to Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270, The Carriage Club of Charlotte, 5800 Old Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Oh my goodness... Another of the greatest generation has passed. Mr. Thompson was like a surrogate dad to me, Mike, David, and all the other friends who grew up in Lansdowne in the early to mid 60's. My deepest and sincerest sympathies to my friend Jeff, and of course Mrs. Thompson, Joe, Ann and Jane, and their famlies.
