Julianne Capel Obituary

Julianne Boone Capel

June 16, 1935 - December 30, 2024

Troy, North Carolina - The Capel family, with the larger Montgomery County community, mourns the passing of Julianne Boone Capel, who left us on December 30, at the age of 89.

A visitation will be held at Bumgarner Funeral Home on Thursday, January 2nd, from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2024, at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 239 N Russell St, Troy, NC 27371. The Capel family invites you to join them in celebrating Julianne's remarkable life. A reception in the church Fellowship Hall will follow the service.

Born on June 16, 1935, in Waynesville, North Carolina, Julianne Boone Capel, a direct descendant of explorer Daniel Boone, was the first and only daughter of John Mark Boone Jr. and Mary Emma White. From her mother, Julianne gained a happy embrace of life, and from her father, a quiet, graceful strength. Julianne met her lifelong love, Jesse Smith Capel Sr, at the age of 14. At age 19, the two were married in 1958 and enjoyed 68 years of companionship, building their family, traveling the world, nurturing friendships and fostering community.

Julianne was a founder of the Troy Mother's Club, a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of North Carolina, a lifelong supporter of the North Carolina Museum of History, and a devoted member of First United Methodist Church. She was the co-author of several community cookbooks and a passionate gardener and beekeeper. Julianne managed a backyard apiary and led the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association, earning blue ribbons for the club's local honey at the NC State Fair. With husband Jesse, the two gained notoriety for their raucous yearly "Pig Day" events, inviting friends to join in the making of sausage, and the curing of country hams. Finally, and with nerves of steel, Julianne was the first mate on her husband's sailboat, turning every weekend aboard in to a floating festival of food and family. Remembered most will be her grace, her kindness, her beauty and gentleness.

Julianne was predeceased by her husband, Jesse and by her son, Smith Capel. Julianne is survived by her brother, Dan Boone and her daughters Mary Clara, Julie, and Kea, her daughter-in-law Libby, as well as her 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
