Katherine Erwin Obituary

Katherine Renfrow Erwin was born at home in Matthews, NC on February 24, 1919 and passed away in Matthews on August 2, 2016. Her husband James H. Erwin passed on August 4, 1996. They are survived by four children, Jim Erwin (Tootie), Kathy Devereux (George), Jeff Erwin (Sam), Charlie Erwin (Susan). She loved Tootie, George, Sam and Susan as her own. She leaves 8 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and a great extended family. She is also survived by her brother in law, Bill Erwin (Lorraine). She was the last survivor of her family generation and preceded by her parents, John and Kate Renfrow and siblings, John Thomas, Jeff and Jack Renfrow, Nina Wiggins, Sue Wilson and Helen London.

Katherine grew up in Matthews and was the oldest living graduate of Matthews School. She told wonderful childhood stories of downtown Matthews and trips to Renfrow Hardware, founded by her grandfather, T.J. Renfrow. She graduated from Matthews H.S. and attended Women's College in Greensboro and Queens College in Charlotte. She and Jim were married May 5, 1937. During Jim's career with Southern Bell, they lived in Greensboro and Wilmington then settled in Charlotte.

Most importantly she was a Mother and homemaker however she enjoyed working many years alongside her Father at the Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds office. Her greatest joy throughout her life was spending time with her family at any time or for any occasion.

We sincerely thank the staff of Willowbrook Court at Plantation Estates for their kind and generous care and encourage donations to the Matthews Historical Society, Matthews Help Center or the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

A service will be held Saturday, August 6th at 2pm at Plantation Estates in Matthews. Online condolences may be shared through www.tallentfuneralservice.com.

We were neighbors with the Erwins from 1985 to 1991 at which time we moved to Hickory NC. We were the first "young couple" with "young kids" to move to a home on Bradbury in many years and were so welcomed by all. We still have a clock that my husband Mike purchased from Mr. Jim's magical clock building. So we do think of them all the time and hope that you know we will always honor their memories. Such great people, Mr. Jim so sharp and handsome and Ms. Katherine so beautiful and elegant. We will always be grateful for their friendship.

Dearest Erwin Family,
We are sorry to learn of the passing of dear Katherine. We were neighbors of your parents on Bradbury Drive in Charlotte for 7 years back in the late 80's and early 90's before we moved to Hickory NC. What great memories we have of our awesome block parties and your Dad's clock collection. Please know that we bought one of his clocks from him and still treasure it here on our mantel. May you find peace and comfort in knowing that your mom and dad are both together again in God's kingdom.
Thinking of you,
Mike and Mary Keziah

Dearest Kathy- Your mom was so kind and good to us when we got together for family events. Always inclusive- always interested in hearing about our lives and doings. What a blessing she was to you and your brothers- her grands and greats- in laws and outlaws. I never heard her say a harsh word about anyone. Blessings to you and George at this time of loss. Thankfulness for the many years of having her in your life and in the lives of all. Love, Bill & Donna
