Kristen Kahle Obituary
That's what she wrote on a questionnaire for the Carousel Queen pageant.
"I hope to have an impact so great, that it reaches beyond my community farther than anything I could ever imagine, even the sun," she wrote.
She was scheduled to represent her school, Porter Ridge High, in the pageant next week.
Kahle, 17, died Sunday when she lost control of her car on a two-lane road near her home in Monroe. She was on her way home from a friend's house, driving about 65 mph as she entered a curve, lost control and struck a tree, N.C. Highway Patrol officials said.
The speed limit on Medlin Road about a mile south of Monroe is 45 miles per hour.
She was alone in the car and wearing a seat belt. The wreck happened around 12:45 a.m. officials said.
Kahle, who went by Alex, had an infectious laugh and always wore a big smile, said Jordan Griffin, one of Kahle's best friends.
Griffin, Kahle and three others -- Lauren Little, Hailey Helms and Kayla Morton -- had been best friends since preschool. They called their group "the fivesome." They attended different high schools, but remained close.
"We were always laughing," Griffin said.
She remembers a video they made late one night while cooking fries.
"We were making a reality show like `Survivor' and interviewing each other," Griffin said. They called it "French Fry Island."
Kahle loved to celebrate "Kids Day" with pool parties at her house; it's a calendar holiday only she seemed to know about, Griffin said.
Porter Ridge High held a candlelit vigil at the school Sunday night. Students painted the giant rocks in front of the campus as a tribute. They drew Spider-Man, because she always liked him, said cheerleading coach Catie Brown. Kahle had kept a Spider-Man punching bag in her room since she was a kid, friends said.
Kahle, a senior, had been accepted to Western Carolina University and Charleston Southern University in Charleston, friends said.
She was active in school as a cheerleader, student council member and honor roll student, said Porter Ridge Principal Sam Basden.
"If you're lucky, you get two or three kids like her in your career," Basden said. "She was one of those ray of sunshine children."

I never got the chance to know you, but from everything that I've heard about you, you were a wonderful person and touched many peoples hearts with your presence and attitude. My teacher Mrs. Helms had coached you when you were cheer leading at Porter Ridge High and told us all about you and how wonderful you are! Just by hearing about your story gave me hope and taught me that "life is short, so be happy" God bless y'all.

I never knew you personally, but my teacher and your best friend, Katie Hoff, have told us a lot about you. You are greatly missed by the ones that love you the most. I pray that your family and friends have found or yet to find the inner peace they need to cope with the wonderful and beautiful young women they have lost at such a young age. RIP Angel Alex. Seven years later, still think about you everyday. Never going to meet another cheer coach quite like you. A lot has changed since I was an 11 year old kid looking up to the pretty varsity cheerleader; now I am that senior varsity cheerleader. Thanks for inspiring me, Alex. I never knew you personally but you've changed my life and made a difference. Yesterday your mom came to my school (Monroe High) and shared your story with us. It gave me a different outlook on everything. VIP for a VIP is an amazing program. While your mom was speaking I couldn't stop crying. My husband and I moved to Monroe 3 years ago. We see a yellow bow and a sign that has this young lady's name on it each day as we leave our home on Medlin Rd. We often wondered who she was. Now we know that she was a special young lady that is loved by many, some who knew her and some who did not. May she "Rest In Peace" knowing that she did leave her legacy.
May God continue to bless her family and friends. Rest assure that you will see her again one day.

It was a year ago today that I last saw you! I had on my drum major uniform and you had on your cheerleading uniform. Alex was an amazing young lady. She changed my life and I am so lucky to have been apart of her short, but power life. I remember the first time I met Alex. It was May of 2005. I went up to her and asked her if she knew my brother and her exact words were "OH PATTY McFATTY. I LOVE THAT KID". From that moment I knew with her crazy personality, beautiful smile, and big heart, that I would grow to love her. She always had a way of making me feel better even when I was having the worst day. I turely miss Alex and I can't wait till the day I get to see her again. May she rest in peace.

Oh my God I miss alex so much. We have grown up since kindergarden and have been in the same classes until we parted ways in high school. I totally miss her. I didn't find out until the day after her funeral when it was in the paper. I remember when Alex was probably 3 or 4 years old and my mom would watch her so that you and Dick could go out. She used to show me how she could do push-ups (at three years old). We would just laugh at her the whole night.You guys really raised a special daughter. Just being at her funeral and hearing what everyone had to say about her makes you want to be a better person. I didn't know your daughter personally. What a read really makes her seem like a great person. I just lost my brother two months ago Tuesday about the same way. I just want you to know that I am really thinking about your family and some of us really do know what your going through.

Alex, i don't think remembers me but i sure do remember her from the Porter Ridge Pageant! She just stood out. I voted for her for Mrs.Personality! She definetly deserved it! She was outgoing and would ALWAYS ALWAYS be smiling! She would be the one to find something good in EVERYONE!
Every time I look up at the sun, I do see her smile and it is be brighter than the sun! Sun Stand Still!

there are no words to explain or help understand such a senseless loss.. i hope you can find strength in your faith and know that there is another angel in heaven watching over all her friends and family.. while i did not know alex all the entries in this book are amazing and i am sure she was a wonderful person.. perhaps she did make a lasting impression on those around her. having a daughter at piedmont high i will look at every day with her a blessing knowing that we are never sure of another day. i will, because of alex, appreciate her more and try not to sweat the little things and remember what is really important. find comfort in what your daughter accomplished in her very short life.. god bless

I heard about Alex through my nephew, Austin Steele. My heart breaks for all of you and I know your lives will never be the same again. I didnt know Alex that well, but from the few times I talked to her I could tell she was just a really nice person. She had the most biggest and beautiful smile that could brighten anyones day and just a fun and bubbly personality where you would always be in a good mood around her. I was visiting my niece, Taylor, the weekend of your devastating loss. It was apparent by the reaction in the community that she meant so much to so many people. The pictures of her are proof that you raised a happy, outgoing, positive child and you should be proud. The service last night was a moving testimony to a truly remarkable young woman. When I read of all she accomplished in her short life, I am not surprised.

i am so sorry for yous loss. i didnt know alex very well but i do know that she will be missed. i met alex through her friend that i go 2 church with. she is now resting with Jesus. i will miss her. i will keep you all in my prayers.

I'll never forget the day Alex walked into the bandroom at Monroe Middle School and asked if she could be in the band. We couldn't say "no" to her, so she joined the band at Monroe Middle playing the mallets. She was a great student and always a joy to teach! She will be missed greatly, but never forgotten! You are in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. I hope that the power of love and prayer is at least of some comfort to you as you progress through the days, weeks, and months to come.

Alex was truly a ray of sunshine. I knew her through Kayla (my niece). I had the pleasure of meeting you as I sat with Connie at one of the games this year. We were blessed to get to spend some time with Alex at Disney this spring when she went with Kayla. She was sweet to my children and they loved to watch her cheer. She will be missed by everyone who knew her and you are forever in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

To alex and her family, alex was always the happiest person. Whenever i was sad at school she always would give me the biggest hug and make me happy and say something to make me laugh. Whenever i stayed at your house i always remembered one specific thing, and it was the bbq sauce next to her bed ! Alex was always the one to be a role model and i was so lucky to have her as a friend. She is missed by everyone and also loved.

wow, where do i even begin? i can't beleve that just a little over a month ago i was sitting with you at the piedmont and monroe football game. Alex was such an amazing and inspirational person to be around. she always had a smile on her face and there was never a time that i was around her and she wasn't in the best mood. I never saw Alex get mad over anything. But even though she is no longer with us, she stays in our hearts. and her family is always in my prayers. Stay strong.
