Mr. Helms, age 88 of 917 Wabash Avenue died August 8, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services will be at 11:00am on Monday in the chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home conducted by Reverend Sammy Case. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00PM Sunday evening at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
Mr. Helms was born in Union County, N. C. June 3, 1920 son of the late Lester Crawford and Dora Foard Helms. He was the owner and operator of L. W. Helms Oil Company and Helms Real Estate.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Lee Helms. Surviving are his children and their families, son, Larry W. Helms and wife Pat of Oakboro, N. C. and their children, Alonda Williams and husband, Tim, their daughter, Kristal and companion, Kris Canupp, their daughter, Kaylee, Angelia Souther,her children, Amber Davis, her husband, Jason, her son, Jayden, Aundria Fisher, and her husband, Tim, their children, Whitney, Aaron, Jaylan, and Preston. L. J. Helms, Jr., his daughter, Summer. and Larry's son, Dustin, son, Eddie Helms and wife, Linnie of Albemarle, N. C. and children, Kelly Helms and wife, Susan of Mooresville, NC, and their children, Jacob and Reagan. daughter, Shana Helms and companion, Tony Barbee of Stanfield, N. C. and children, Kristin and Jace. son, Todd Helms and wife, Jennie of New London, NC, their children, McKayla, Gavin, and son to be. Son, R. D. Helms of Cramerton, NC and daughter, Ciera, daughter, Marsha Frazier and husband, John and daughter, Tracy Garmon of Alexis, NC and their grandson, E. J. Merritt, their son, John Frazier, III, his wife, Heather, their daughters, Raynne and Johnna of Hayden, Idaho. son, Richard Helms and his sons, Richard, Jr., Mark, and Timothy all of Mooresville, NC. Son, Michael C. Helms of Charlotte. L. W. had a special bond with his son, Michael and grandson, E. J. Merritt.
When he had his first stroke, E. J. was two years old and was the only person who could understand dad when he would talk. This was on going and E. J. is now sixteen years old.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Presbyterian Hospital.
