Lorenzo Charles Obituary

Lorenzo Emile Charles, who is best known for taking a last-second desperation shot from teammate Dereck Whittenburg and slam-dunking the N.C. State Wolfpack basketball team to a 1983 NCAA championship title, died Monday afternoon in a bus crash on Interstate 40 in West Raleigh.

Police said Charles, 47, was driving a charter bus westbound on I-40 when he lost control on an exit ramp and crashed into a stand of trees. He was the only person on the bus.

A Raleigh police accident reconstruction unit remained at the crash scene Monday night, along with a unit of the N.C. Highway Patrol, to determine what caused the crash, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said. The accident blocked two lanes of I-40 for several hours.

News of Charles' death spread quickly among Wolfpack players, fans and others whom he had touched.

"It's just an awful day," Whittenburg said. "An awful, awful day."

New N.C. State basketball coach Mark Gottfried played for Alabama against Charles in the 1985 NCAA tournament. The two reminisced about that game, a Wolfpack win, when Charles visited the coaching staff last week on campus.

"He had a big smile on his face, and he was so full of life," Gottfried said. "We lost a great one, and I'm not just talking about the basketball player. He had a great personality."

Charles' reach in the sports world went beyond his contributions on the court. He drove for the Duke lacrosse team and became a part of the family, coach John Danowski said Monday. Danowski had Charles talk to the team during the NCAA tournament in 2010, before the Blue Devils won the national title.

"It's great that he scored that winning basket, but he was so much more than that," Danowski said. "Everyone here loved him. We are all heartbroken."

Charles was driving for Elite Tours, an Apex company also known as Elite Coach. Calls to the company were not returned, and no one came to the door after business hours.

Elite Tours has been registered as an interstate carrier since June 2009, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The company has five drivers and a fleet of seven vehicles, including limousines, vans and two full-size motor coaches.

The company had a good safety record. It was cited for a minor violation in April, when an Elite driver stopped for an inspection in Alabama failed to produce a current record of duty status to show that he or she had not driven too many hours without rest.

Charles, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High. After his days at N.C. State, he was selected 41st overall in the 1985 NBA draft and played one season in the NBA, averaging 3.4 points in 36 games with the Atlanta Hawks in 1985-86. He played internationally and in the Continental Basketball Association until 1999.

Charles finished his college career with 1,535 total points - 15th on the school's scoring list - and his .575 shooting percentage in 1985 remains a school record for seniors.

He'll always be remembered, though, for that winning dunk in the 1983 NCAA tournament championship game against the heavily favored Houston Cougars. The Cougars were led by future NBA all-stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde "The Glide" Drexler.

That moment was quickly followed by another Wolfpack fans will never forget: late coach Jim Valvano running around the floor in amazed euphoria looking for someone to hug.

Valvano's widow, Pam Strasser, said Monday she was heartbroken to hear of Charles' passing and described him as always laid-back and polite.

"That night in Albuquerque, you'd never known he'd made the big shot. He was so humble," she said. "That was just Lorenzo, though. He was the same nice young guy whether we'd won or lost. He was quiet, but he loved people and loved being around those guys on that team."

Charles lived in Wake Forest with his wife, Theresa Charles.

I just learned of Lorenzo going to heaven in June 2011 when reading an article an NC State student wrote about Dean Smith last month. I found it on a friend's FB page. But this is no accident. I sat up one night many years ago with a video camera in my hands and taped the 1983 game & Coach V's last speech that was being rebroadcast on tv. Our recording device was broken and I was determined to have what I had SO enjoyed in real life. Eventhough I'm a garnet bleeding SC Gamecock, I always held a special place in my heart for Coach V and the Cardiac Kids. I think Lorenzo was a lot like our Heisman winner, George Rogers. I will certainly pray for Zo's family and look forward to seeing him in heaven.

I am a very good friend of Lorenzo's step daughter Jenny "Lynn" Cantrell but over the years have lost touch. I am just now hearing about this terrible news. I had the opportunity to meet Lorenzo. He would always laugh and cut up with me when I would call Jenny. He was truly one of the down to earth nicest guy that I have ever met. I don't keep up with basketball and didn't even know til after I met him that he was a famous athlete. I just knew he was my friends step dad and that he had a great personality. My deepest condolences go out to Theresa and Jenny and the rest of the Charles family whom I never had the pleasure to meet. Jenny if u or Theresa read this please contact Paula "Bear" at (910) 246-7070 Love always.

To the Charles family, I fondly remember that particular NC State championship game that was awesome. Not being a State fan before then, the Cardiac Kids with Jim Valvano won me over hands down. Jim's gone, way too soon, and now Lorenzo is gone, way too soon. That particular basketball season totally won me over as a State fan. They have had some really great and very bad luck. I'd like to think that Lorenzo is now with God and Coach. Mrs. Charles, I offer you my sincere sympathy and prayers and thank you for loving this brilliant man in life. He was so very lucky to have you. May he rest in peace, a life well lived, and Mrs. Charles, may you find the peace, the peace only God can give you during this sad time of your life....Kind reagards, Suzanne Whitaker

You can sum up, all the "sum" parts, of Lorenzo, by the innocent, unaware, & bewildered look on his face, when he had just completed the championship winning shot. What that told the world, was Lorenzo was just doing his "job". What he did was so instinctive, it was unassuming in it's nature. Coach V had no doubt, run that hypothetical situation in practice so many times, that it was no accident that when Derrick hoisted up a 38 ft. airball, ZO was ther to celan it up, and put it up. He was just SO focused, that a teammate had to rush up to him and TELL HIM that he had just hit the winning shot!!!

That was ZO! Just a blue collar guy at heart, just doing his job. I can't say I knew him as a person, but as a 27 year old ex NEW YORKER, who grew up watching and rooting for the KNICKS, I had fallen in love with a new team. And as I watched not in amazement, I knew I had witnessed something that would stay with me and affect me for the rest of my life.

So as I am writing this note, as tears are in my eyes, I hope ZO can see the tears in my heart & soul, for Lorenzo Charles brought to me a memory of goodness for a lifetime.

God bless him and his family.

Sincerely, Robb S. L.A., CA

What I will always remember about Lorenzo was what a kind gentleman he was, even back in 83 when he was so young and we were classmates at NCSU. Even back then he was so down to earth and a true kindhearted guy. Becoming famous with his winning dunk never went to his head. He came back to Raleigh and to class the same person he was before. He has remained that over the years and anyone who ever met him, whether it be coincidentally on a street, at a game, a passenger on his bus or limo - they'll all tell you the same - HE WAS A KIND GENTLEMAN! A gentle giant. Love you Lorenzo and thanks for all the smiles. You WILL be missed!

To the Charles Family: Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss of such a wonderful man and family member. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

My husband and I met Lorenzo Charles in October 2009 when he was our driver for a week for our group APWS bird conference in Raleigh. It was such a pleasure and a great honor to be able to spend this time with him during this time. (My husband's alumni is NC State and was thrilled) Lorenzo had such a gentle manner, kind smile and wonderful laugh. On our post trip he brought our group down ever so safely from Grandfather Mountain on his charter bus with the greatest of ease despite the horrific weather and 0 visibility. He will be carried in our memory forever!

I moved to Raleigh in 2001. I worked as a meter maid. Well, one afternoon I was walking passed a detailed service place and this guy started talking to me and we were talking about basketball. I started talking about how NC State beat Houston many years ago. And Lorenzo Charles came out of my mouth. The guy was like Lorenzo is in my office talking. I forgot about the tickets I was writing. I enter the building and I walked real slow looking for him in this office, well when I saw him I was to shy to say anything. So the guy was like she wanted to meet you. So he stood up and extended his hand to me. I was in la la land. The joy I felt he was so pleasant . When I left I started back writing tickets but you can believe one thing Lorenzo Charles never had to worry about me giving him a ticket. Although that was 10 years ago I will cherish that moment forever. RIP and God Bless your family. Sunshine (Greenville NC.)

Like most people, I remember Lorenzo for that glorious basketball dunk. In my opinion, there was never a team in all of basketball that deserved to win a national championship like the NC wolfpack. The entire team including Coach V had such a special quality that made everyone in the nation want them to win. Lorenzo was a huge part of that and he will always be remembered for that one shining moment. God Bless his wife and family who will be in our families prayers.
