Margaret Derkacs

Margaret Derkacs WEDDINGTON - Mrs. Margaret Derkacs, 91, of Weddington, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Hospice of Union County, Monroe, NC. She was born on December 11, 1921, in Marsteller, PA. A long time resident of Jersey City, NJ, and later Port Orange, Fl, she recently resided in Weddington, NC with her daughter. Margaret Derkacs was born and raised in a small mining town in central Pennsylvania. She moved to Brooklyn, NY, as a teen to work as a nanny for two families. She supported the WWII effort as an electronics assembler for a Defense plant. She married her husband George in 1942 and they were married for 71 years. She loved cooking for friends and family and was known for her stuffed cabbage and nut rolls. In her later years, she especially enjoyed dining out and conversing with family and friends. She is survived by her son Dennis Derkacs and wife Denise; her daughter Dyan Derkacs - Wasylyk and husband John; her brothers Albert and Stephen Tomechko and Joseph and Michael Olish; and by her sister Josephine Malwitz. She also is survived by five grandchildren, David Derkacs; Daniel Derkacs; Derek Derkacs; Rachel Wasylyk; and Brandon Wasylyk; two great-grandchildren Hannah and Simon; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband on April 8, 2013 George Derkacs; her parents, Albert and Frances Tomechko; and by her siblings Sophie, John, Agnes, Adeline, Helen and Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 am Monday, November 25, 2013 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28277. Private burial will be at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel.
