Marie S. Alexander
Mrs. Alexander, of Cornelius, NC passed away peacefully at home on March 17, 2008. Born on July 10, 1919 in Guilford County, she was a daughter of the late James Monroe Strickland and Ella Mae Evans Strickland. She graduated from Union Mills Boarding in Spindale, NC in 1936 and completed Beauty College in Greensboro, NC in 1937. After moving to Miami Beach, FL to work in the salon industry, she traveled as a sales rep for Raymond Laboratories. Marie relocated to Charlotte, NC and married James C. Alexander of Concord, NC in 1950. After having 3 daughters, she remained active in the church and community by singing in the choir, as a Girl Scout leader and as the Republican Judge in her precinct for the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections. Always an entrepreneur, she sold Fuller Brush and worked as an elder care provider with private duty clients. Gardening was her life's work. Marie and Jim were lifetime members of Bethel Presbyterian Church. They built their retirement home in Cornelius in 1979 where they continued to build their community through volunteering and service.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 28, at Bethel Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following.
Survivors are her daughters, Rose and Shelia Alexander of Cornelius, Nancy Oakley and husband, Bill of Mooresville, stepson, John Reid and wife Nelda of Sylva, NC, sisters Joy Mills and Celeste Hill of Winston Salem, NC, granddaughters, Courtney and Cara Reid. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 2003 and brother, Harlan Strickland in 1997.
Her family sends gratitude to their neighbors, members and staff of Bethel Presbyterian Church, The Davidson Clinic, Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville, Olde Knox Commons, Hospice and Jean Clark for all their loving care.
Memorials may be to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19920 Bethel Church Road, Cornelius, NC 28031 or Hospice Lake Norman, 705 Griffith Street Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036.

I am so sorry for your great loss-Marie has always been very special to me and many at Bethel Church-always cheerful and ready to assume a task. She will be greatly missed. You are all in my prayers-that God will wrap His Loving Arms around you and comfort you.
