ALBEMARLE -- Mary Allen Sikes, 87, born January 4, 1918, passed away Sunday, November 27, at Duke Health Raleigh Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born in Northampton County, she was the daughter of the late William Allen Williamson and Lucy Ann Sykes Williamson. She was raised in Turkey, NC, attended Flora McDonald College and graduated from Women's College of the University of NC. She taught elementary school in Albemarle for nearly 30 years, most of which was spent teaching first grade.
In 1940, she married Oscar Jennings Sikes, Jr. of Albemarle. She and Oscar enjoyed travelling. They shared an avid interest in politics which she continued after his death in 1978.
She is survived by three children: O.J. Sikes, III and wife, Elena, of Leonia, NJ; Mary Williamson Sikes of Raleigh; Dr. William A. Sikes and wife, Jennie, of Rose Valley, PA; four grandchildren: O.J. Sikes, IV of Ridgewood, NJ; Marianne Sikes Grush and husband, Eric, of Holly Springs; Foster Wilder Sikes and wife, Keri, of Raleigh; John L. Sikes of NY, NY; and three great-grandchildren: Mary Kathryn Grush, Matthew Wilder Sikes and William Jennings Grush.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at 2:00 PM in Hartsell Funeral Home's chapel. Rev. Dennis Ricks and Rev. John Futterer will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Park.
