Melissa Greer, the WBTV meteorologist who learned late last year while pregnant that she had a rare and virulent cancer, died Friday at Carolinas Medical Center. She was 27.
Greer's optimistic and public handling of the disease inspired people across the region, making her focal point for people touched by cancer and a frequent mention in prayer chains.
"So many people respected her for with the grace with which she handled this situation," said Channel 3 reporter Molly Grantham, Greer's friend and former roommate.
"She was full of spirit, full of life. She rolled with the punches, including this."
Greer developed complications in her pregnancy in November. Physicians discovered a cervical tumor. It was soon diagnosed as large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, an aggressive cancer so rare that at any given time only a few dozen people in the country have it.
She underwent a regimen of chemotherapy at CMC in December, but the procedure failed to halt the spread of cancer cells to other organs.
On Feb. 6, eight months into her pregnancy, she delivered a healthy son, Connor, by Caesarean section at the University of Iowa Hospital. Surgeons then performed a hysterectomy and removed tumors, including cancerous cells on her liver, in a 12-hour operation.
Physicians held out hope that further treatment would arrest the cancer. On April 1, when co-workers threw a baby shower for her, Greer was strong and radiant, but in recent days, she weakened.
On Thursday night she returned to Carolinas Medical Center. She died peacefully Friday morning surrounded by her family.
Greer grew up in Abbeville, S.C., where her father was a Southern Baptist minister and her mother a school teacher. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina with a 3.9 grade-point average before going on to a geosciences degree and a 4.0 at Mississippi State.
She was just 25 when WBTV offered her a job in Charlotte as weekend meteorologist. It was a dream assignment for her, forecasting the weather in the same region where she grew up.
Greer is survived by her husband, Roger Polsky and son Connor; her parents; and a brother and sister.
A funeral service will be held next week. Arrangements are incomplete.

It was very sad to hear about Melissa. I will always remember that she was on the T.V. doing her weather report while I was giving birth to my child. She was a great friend to the people that were closest to her heart.

I was a good friend of Melissa while in graduate school at Mississippi state University. Melissa was so funny, our inside jokes kept me laughing for two years. She always spoke so highly of her parents. I wish her family all the best.

Some thirty ago, a WBT legend passed with cancer, Betty Feezor. Melissa was born the year after Betty's death. I read Betty's book about a year ago, very inspirational. Melissa Greer reminded me of her as well as Bob Knowles. You go back 40 years ago, Alan Newcomb passed away at BT. Same type of people. Optimistic intellects.
The song "Goodnight Tonight" by Paul McCartney reminded me of her life, she lived to the fullest with spunk like it was her last day on earth (Ironically, that song came the year she was born).

Happy belated Mothers Day to such a brave and courageous woman. Even though I never knew you, I had followed your story and was so very sad when I heard of your passing. I think about your little baby boy Connor and pray that he grows up knowing that his mommy was a fighter and that she loved him so much. I am sure his daddy will make sure of that. The Greer and Polsky families are being prayed for and thought of daily.
GOD Bless all of you!!!

I'd like to express my profound sorrow in the loss of Melissa Greer. I first met her when she was working at Newschannel 9 in Chattanooga, TN. I was commander of the Civil Air Patrol unit in Cleveland and had asked her to come up and talk to the cadets about the weather. We all had a great time and the cadets were really excited about having her there. Not long after that, she moved to NC and I had lost contact with her. I re-established contact about 18 months ago and told her about the impression she left there.
I was transferred to VA last summer and heard about her battle while surfing the net in Dec. A bright ray of light and immense joy has left us for now. But we are all better for having the honor to have known her. God bless her family and that they all be comforted in this time.

I am sure that words can never replace the treasure that the Greer and Polsky families had in Melissa. Although I never had the opportunity to meet her, her smile was contagious and her personality was priceless. You can count on the fact that God will allow Melissa to serve as the best meteorologist in Heaven, looking down on her family. Her tears of joy will be shared in the rainfall and her smile will be shared in the gorgeous sunshine. God be with you as you continue to lean on his loving and never ending grace.

Melissa was a bright, caring and courageous young woman who certainly taught everyone alot who kept up with and watched her fight her battle publicy. She was such an inspiration and a delight to the viewers whose lives she touched with her dignity and grace. My prayers are with all the family and may you find some comfort in knowing that she earned the admiration, respect, and love of so many especially by telling of her relationship with Jesus Christ, Heaven has surely gained a special angel. The special angel she left behind in Baby Connor will surely have many stories told to him about what a wonderful, loving mom he had. Godspeed to all whose lives were greatly touched by the short time she had here on earth. I am glad she is in a better place than I were she feels no pain or sorrow. We will all miss your infectious smile and I pray I see it again one day.

I met Melissa my first year in college at USC. We lived in the same dorm and became good friends. We hung out often together, and we even had Religion class together...which she ended up helping me with. She was such a smart and ambitious person and it became infectious. I believe I got a B in that class and I couldn't have done it without her help. After the first year we, for some reason, grew apart. I just recently learned of her heartbreaking story. I haven't talked to Melissa in years, but when I heard this tragic news I couldn't help but cry and just feel complete sadness all over. I can't stop thinking about her now and the pain she must have lived with the last 6 months of her life. I am a mother and I cannot even imagine how she must have dealt with knowing that she wouldn't see her son grow up. Her family and her friends are constantly in my prayers. May we all one day learn to come to peace with this difficult and unexplained circumstance. What a wonderful person Melissa was and will be remembered as forever!

We just learned of Melissa's passing. My deepest sympathies are extended to her husband, her much loved baby boy, her family and her friends. We "met" Melissa watching her on WBTV and enjoyed her so very much because of that happy, vibrant personality she had. She was always so positive and she faced this cancer head on and with such strength. She will be so very missed.

My wife and I never met Melissa but felt a connection to her because of seeing her on the news and also because we gave birth to a daughter a little over two months ago. To the family, Thank you so much for sharing Melissa's life with all of us. It was neat to have an all female news team on the week-ends and the first time I saw them together I thought they seem to be having more fun just being together than having to do the news. Being a preachers kid I also understand how that impacts your life in a very positive manner as well. From all I have seen and heard about her life recently she sure didn't need to learn how to make friends or impact people. May God keep all of you in his care and his peace be with you in the future.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was never lucky enough to cross paths with you, Melissa, but to millions you are the epitome of true motherhood. I think Melissa's father said it best when he said she had been a great achiever all her life. She did in 27 years what some people can never do in a 90 year life span.

I just want to say 1st of all my thoughts and prayers are with Melissa's family, and friends. I have been keeping up to date with her condition on the news, internet, ever since i heard she was diagnosed, although I'd never met her, I knew of her, from seeing her on tv.She had a smile that would light up a room, She seemed to be such a beautiful, intelligent woman, which I'm sure she was. The story had really touched me, My mom had fought cancer for two years. It's a pain you cant explain, seeing your loved ones going through something so powerful and theres nothing you can do to take the pain from them or control it..But from what I have learned through this whole story I think Melissa had made her peace with God, and for that, it could help make you stronger, knowing shes in a better place* I know life doesnt always turn out fair and sometimes bad things happen to terrific people, But just know shes in heaven smiling down on her family, and friends. She will be missed by many and will always be remembered. Her story touched many people. God Bless

Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet Melissa but I have known her husband for about 5 yrs through friends from Rock Hill. I play softball with members of the WBTV crew on Saturday mornings and based on last Saturday I see the mark she left on everyone. I wish the best for Roger, Connor, and the entire family in this difficult time. My prayers are with you all.

It's often times difficult, at times like this, to find courage, strength, hope, perseverence, or the ability to face something like this, with grace & humility. Melissa Greer, was just such a person. Whether you heard about her courageous battle on television, a friend, or read about it in the paper; her story brought strength, courage, & hope-to alot of people she didn't even know.It takes a very special person to do something like that-and I have no doubt, heaven's light shines brighter, just because she's there...
My thoughts , prayers & deepest sympathy to her family, to her husband & son & all those who knew her.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family in this time of great sorrow. Please take comfort in knowing that Melissa is with her Father now, and is able to watch over all of you in a way that she would not have been able to in her condition.
