Mildred Stout Obituary

Mildred Lee Stout CHARLOTTE - Mildred Borden Lee Stout, 90, a resident of the Southminster Retirement Community of Charlotte, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Mildred was born on August 7th, 1923 in Goldsboro, NC, the daughter of Harry Fitzhugh Lee and Julia Borden Lee. She had an older brother, Harry Fitzhugh Lee, who died in infancy, a younger brother, William Fitzhugh Lee, and a younger sister, Sallie Lee Walker, who are both deceased. She was a 1940 graduate of Goldsboro High School, and graduated from St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh in 1942. After attending Salem College in Winston- Salem for a year, she returned to Goldsboro and worked in administration for the Boy Scouts of America. In the fall of 1944, she moved to New York and worked in reservations for Eastern Airlines at Grand Central Station. In 1942 Mildred met her future husband Doyle Allison Stout, a young Marine officer, while he was stationed at Quantico in Virginia. They corresponded throughout the war, while Doyle served in the Pacific at Saipan and Iwo Jima. After returning from the war in 1945, Doyle proposed to Mildred and they were married in Goldsboro on October 19, 1946 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. After getting married, Mr. and Mrs. Stout moved to his native state of Colorado where he worked as an appraiser on the Ute Indian Reservation. While living in Denver, they started a family, celebrating the arrival of their first daughter, Julia Borden Stout, and their first son, Fitzhugh Lee Stout. In the fall of 1952, Doyle and Mildred moved to Goldsboro, where they had a second son, Doyle Allison Stout III. The next year they moved to Charlotte, where Mr. Stout started a constructions business and they had two more children, Robert Lafferty Stout and Mary Custis Lee Stout. Doyle designed and built their home at 3622 Pelham Lane, where they raised their family and she lived for more than 50 years. Mr. Stout died in 1981. Mildred was very active at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, and was a member of Charlotte Junior League, the Colonial Dames of America, and Wing Haven Gardens. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, an avid gardener, and had many friends in book, sewing and garden clubs. Mildred was kind, loving, and always willing to help anyone in need. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her five children and their spouses: Julia Stout and husband, Jon Corcoran of Black Mountain, Fitzhugh and Ann Martin Stout of Charlotte, Doyle and wife Jane Baxter Stout of Charlotte, Robert and Debbie Stokes Stout of Raleigh, and Mary Custis and Bill Covington of Asheville. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Lauren Stout Moore and husband Chris, Sara Stout, Jonathan Stout, and Jennings Stout. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday November 19, 2014 at Christ Church with the Rev. Marty Hedgepeth and Rev. Lisa Saunders officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in The Blue Room. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Church, 1412 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207 or to Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster, 8919 Park Rd., Suite 1000, Charlotte, NC 28210.
