Norman Owensby Obituary

Norman Owensby, MD CHARLOTTE - I wanted to let everyone who loved my Dad, Clyde "Norman" Owensby, know that he died February 7, 2015, just two days after his 83rd birthday. Having grown up in Miami, the son of a Postman, Dad went on to accomplish everything he set out to do. He worked his way thru medical school to become a physician, and later a psychiatrist. He traveled the world, loved gardening, woodworking and reading. He mastered everything he did, from Acappella singing, to creating fine furniture from a tree in the yard, or a computer from spare parts to building a house addition. Where he truly excelled was at being an exceptional, caring human being. He was a wonderful husband and father, providing an extraordinary life for our family. He healed hearts and minds with his no-nonsense approach to health and happiness. He inspired thousands more with the unconditional love and compassion he embodied in the loving way he cared for Jon, his son with Down syndrome, as featured in the PBS documentary, "The Teachings of Jon". Clearly, the world is a less compassionate place without him in it. He is deeply loved and missed. Clyde Norman Owensby was preceded by his wife, Lou Randall Owensby; and is survived by two sons, Charlton Owensby, MD and Jon Owensby of Charlotte; three daughters Leslie Jinkins of Lyles, TN, Jennice Hatcher of Charlotte and Jennifer Sanza of Chapel Hill, NC; four grandchildren and two sisters, Marilyn Cornell of Bakersville, NC and Judy Williams of Miami, FL; and eleven nieces and nephews. the video by Mr. and Mrs. Owensby on the teachings of Jon, will forever leave a frank, delicate, honest view of raising a child with Down Syndrome beginning in the 1960s. I show this video 3 times a year to college students, and it always provides a profound experience in learning.
May God have both of their souls in his arms. The Ownensby's spirit lives on in Jon and his siblings.
