Patsy Rose
August 14, 1932 - October 15, 2023
Shelby, North Carolina - Patricia "Patsy" Bland Rose, 91, passed away at her home on October 15, 2023 surrounded by family and close friends. Born in Spindale, NC, she and her family moved to Shelby where she grew up and met the love of her life, Jim. After graduating from Shelby High, Patsy attended Meredith College where she served as president of her sophomore class, student body vice president her junior year, and student body president her senior year. Known for her intelligence and style, she was named Miss Meredith 1954. After graduating from Meredith, Patsy and Jim married, and were just shy of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at the time of Jim's death. Patsy and Jim were blessed with three children and three grandchildren whom they adored.
Patsy began her lifelong dedication to education as a Charlotte elementary school teacher. While Jim finished his degree in Chapel Hill, Patsy taught in Durham, and later in Gastonia. Patsy was a talented businesswoman and opened a private kindergarten in her home, which she and Ethel Marie Kelly operated together for twelve years. Mrs. Rose's students delight in sharing happy and funny memories of their time in her kindergarten. For a decade, she was a broker for Lackey-Blue Real Estate and later worked with her husband at their company, Leasing Services, Inc.
As a trustee at Cleveland Community College, Patsy was appointed to the Executive Board of the North Carolina Association of Community College Trustees by Governor Easley in 2004. Jim and Patsy's generosity to CCC included sponsorship of the Jim & Patsy Rose Library and the Jim & Patsy Rose School of Nursing. Their support extended to many other schools in our state, including Appalachian State University and their beloved Tar Heels at UNC Chapel Hill.
Patsy was passionate about giving back to her community. She served on the Mental Health Association of Cleveland County board for nine years, comforted other bereaved parents as a member and leader of the local Compassionate Friends chapter, led the Junior Charity League of Shelby as President in 1975, generously supported the American Legion World Series, and belonged to two Shelby book clubs. As a long-standing member of Central United Methodist Church, Patsy served in many leadership roles, including Sunday School teacher, church council member, and lay leader. She deeply loved her church family.
Patsy and Jim loved to travel and always came back with a new friend. They cherished their time at their Blowing Rock home, and are remembered for their large Fourth of July parties on their back deck. Their grandchildren fondly remember the times spent with Mama Patsy and JimJim in Blowing Rock, where they went to Tweetsie Railroad in the summer, skied in the winter, and enjoyed Kilwins ice cream year-round.
Patsy and Jim's house was a warm and welcoming beacon of hospitality, often filled with laughter, and always decorated for the season. Patsy was a wonderful cook, and her sweet tea with lemon was legendary.
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents Adam "Addie" and Frances Bland, her husband James Marion "Jim" Rose, Sr., and son John Charles Rose. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Elizabeth "Liz" Rose Berry (Marty), her son James Marion "Jim" Rose, Jr. (Carol), her grandchildren, James Marion Rose, III (Darilynn), Leah Rose Buffington (Tate), Laura Kathryn Rose, and her great-granddaughter, Charlotte Rose Buffington. She also leaves behind her devoted caregivers, Christi Armstrong and Margaret Feasey, as well as many friends and family members.
