Paul Vernon Cope
Mr. Cope, who spent his entire life as a friend, coach and a devoted family man, died Thursday April 20, 2006. He was 72. He died at The Haven in the Village at Carolina Place, while being treated for Alzheimer's.
A graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, he spent his entire career employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He served in many positions in many cities including Miami, FL, Chattanooga, TN, Spartanburg, SC, Columbia, SC, Savannah, GA, Greensboro, NC, Virginia Beach, VA, Dallas, TX and finally Charlotte, NC. Retiring as District Manager. He served on the Southern Division Advisory Board for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, was President of the North Carolina Insurance News Service, and was an active member of the South Carolina Risk & Insurance Managers Association.
Paul Vernon Cope was born on July 13th, 1933 in Anderson, SC to Burton Victor Cope and Lois Ingle Cope. He grew up in the Drayton Mill Village in Spartanburg, SC, where he graduated from Spartanburg High School.
Paul Cope achieved much in his life, starting out in the Drayton Mill Village at the height of the Depression, being the fifth of five children, with the help of friends and family he graduated college and rose to become an executive at one of America's largest insurance companies. He was a great provider for his family, always had a quick wit and a concern for others around him. Paul Cope was an athlete his entire life, from being a full scholarship football player at Wofford College to being a competitive tennis player at Cedar Forest Racquet Club till the very end.
Paul Vernon Cope was predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Peggy Strobel Cope. He is survived by his three children, Victor Pinckney Cope and his wife Lori Little Cope of Charlotte, Pamela Cope Rife and her husband Michael Rife of Clemmons, NC, and Phillip Vernon Cope and his wife Lazann Beth Cope of Atlanta, GA; and three beautiful Grandchildren, Paul Cope, Lauren Cope and Connor Rife. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Mildred Salters of Spartanburg and Doris Brown of New Plymouth, ID.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Paul Vernon Cope will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 29, at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Visitation is 6-8 PM Friday, April 28, at McEwen Charlotte Chapel on Morehead St.

I am so sorry that I didn't know about Paul's passing earlier. He and Peg were great neighbors. I truly missed our conversations about lawn maintenance when I moved from Piccadilly. My sympathies to all of his family.

I will miss not seeing Paul at the Haven. My thoughts and prayers are with you. My mother is Shirlee Mathiason, also at the Haven.
