Paul Newman Obituary

Paul Baker Newman
Mr. Newman, 85, of Charlotte, died at Carolinas Medical Center on Wednesday, August 18, 2004. The cause of death was a head injury incurred in a fall.
Mr. Newman was born in Chicago in 1919, son of Paul Jones Newman and Virginia Murray Newman. He served in Italy, North Africa, and South Carolina during World War II as a Captain in the Eight Army Air Force. It was during this period that he met his future wife, Anne Royall, in Florence, SC. Mr. Newman received advanced degrees from the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa. He taught for several years at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and at Kansas State University, before finding his niche in the English Department of Queens University, where he remained for 30 years. Mr. Newman was a distinguished poet, a two-time winner of the Roanoke-Chowan Award and a recipient of the Zoe Kincaid Award. He published in numerous venues, ranging from Harvard Magazine to the Carolina Review. In his latter years he added novels and children's literature to his considerable repertoire.
The survivors include Mr. Newman's two children, Betsy and William and his grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his wife and a second daughter, Paula.
In lieu of flowers, the survivors request that donations be sent to the Paul Baker Newman Literary Award, a fund set up in his honor in care of Queens University of Charlotte, 1900 Selwyn Ave., Charlotte, NC 28274. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Newman at Queens University, further details to be announced.

Betsy,

I was sorry to learn of Paul's death. I knew him from the bookstore, where I worked briefly, but we remained friends after that. He talked about you and your projects with great interest and enthusiasm. By his account, he thoroughly enjoyed his visits with you and your brother and his family. He was one of my great encouragers in writing -- always a teacher at heart, I suppose. My condolences to you, and my appreciation for my happy acqaintance with your father.

Dr. Newman always called everybody by their last names; Miss Ives, Miss Abshire, Mrs. Hitchcock - I knew that I was his friend when he started calling me "Kate Ives". Never just Kate! "Kate Ives." I have your book that you sent me last Christmas, Dr. Newman, and I love it. Such a wonderful gift you had. God bless to you and your family.

You always told us when we were in class that we needed to go to Greece before we died. It's on my list. Someday, when we meet in the great beyond, I hope we can compare notes on our travels. Godspeed, Mr. Newman! Love, Helen
