Phyllis was such a great friend to all. I worked with her at Newell until I retired. She always shared helpful advice and loved everyone! She really cared about each child in the school, not just the ones in her classes. She will be missed! I just found out about her passing tonight, Feb. 20,2021. The Portlock Family sends our deepest condolences to your entire family. I met Mrs. Ferguson (Fergie) during my time at Newell. I could count on Fergie always! We shared many laughs....We exchanged many stories about life...She spoke to me often about her children and their next steps in life....and she always affectionately mentioned what she planned to cook for her husband/family. I have many memories of all the challenging students we work alongside for many days/months trying to figure out the inner workings of a particular family. I can certainly say she accepted all these challenges and never turned her back on a single student regardless of their circumstances. I always appreciated her presence and I have a decade of memories that will live in my heart forever. My warmest memories center around the wonderful Staff Thanksgiving Meals she orchestrated for many years at Newell. Her love of feeding people was a gift that led to great staff morale and community for many years (and some hard laughs on many occasions). I learned a lot about serving others from Fergie and quite a bit about how to see needs you can support by using your own power for good. I can easily say that Fergie made people feel loved and she made it easy for others to know they were important. I am very thankful for the opportunity to be in her presence. May God keep you during this time and take comfort in the fact that she made it home! Much Love always!

Phyllis will be greatly missed. We did not see each other often due to distance. but when we did there was always lots of fun and laughter. Our fathers were brothers and through them we learned to love one another. She was my cousin, but also my also my "friend." Rest easy Phyllis. I will keep you in my heart.

Ms. Ferguson was full of love, joy and wisdom that she so generously shared with the students and staff of Newell Elementary. There was not ever a time when we talked that we did not laugh or encourage one another. She was and in my heart continues to be the Matriarch on Newell, which is why many of us referred to her as Mother Ferguson. I thank God for Mother Ferguson, she was a blessing. She was really good with the students especially the ones that needed a little extra tender-loving care. She was equaling generous at being a support to me in so many ways. I will miss her dearly. My condolences to your family.
I worked with Ms. Ferguson at Newell. I only knew her for nearly 5 yrs, those time were so precious.
I remember when she couldn't pronounce my name she ended up calling me Ms. A, later on she got it.
She spoke so much of her children and I could see how proud she was of them.
I loved her cooking skills ,sometimes she told me not to bring lunch as she would make me something from home. Ms. Ferguson was a blessing from God.
