Pierre Martimbeau Obituary

Dr. Pierre Martimbeau passed away at his home on June 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 28, 1942, in Montreal, Canada, son of Dr. Emile and Eglantine Martimbeau.

Dr. Martimbeau received his medical degree from the Universite de Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He spent several years practicing family medicine before continuing his medical career at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as a fellow in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Martimbeau became Mayo Clinic's first resident in Gynecologic-Oncology. To further his knowledge of radiation therapy, he studied for an additional year at the Norwegian Radium Hospital in Oslo, Norway, before accepting a position at the Cleveland Clinic as head of Gynecologic-Oncology.

In 1980, Dr. Martimbeau moved to Charlotte, NC, where he opened a private practice that served his patients for 35 years. His approach to his specialty and his concern for his patients was unrivaled.

Outside of his medical practice, Pierre was a man with many passions. One of his proudest moments was becoming an American citizen in 1993. He piloted his own helicopter, captained his own boat, and could navigate by the stars. It was always about the journey, not the destination. He loved music and was a proud supporter of the arts. Above all else, his family and his grandchildren held the most coveted place in his heart.

Pierre was a man of honor and integrity. He aimed to be the best at everything he did, which led him on a never-ending quest for knowledge.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra; his children, Nathalie (Jean-Francois Gauvin) Martimbeau, Tracey (Thorsten) Heise, Isabelle Martimbeau, Sarah (Charles) Grillo, and Elliott (Christine) Martimbeau; his grandchildren, Xavier Gomes, Sabina Da Costa, Conner and Tyler Hicks, Alexandra and Nicholas Heise, Camille and Simon Gauvin, and William and Ian Martimbeau; his brothers, Andre Martimbeau and Claude (Mary-Ellen) Martimbeau; his sister, Louise (Jacques Piette) Martimbeau; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Benjamin Brooks and staff, Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, and all of the family and friends who have been supportive over the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association NC Chapter, 4 N Blount Street, Suite 200, Raleigh, NC 27601, (877) 568-4347; or The Jo Martin ALS Foundation, 100 N Tryon Street, Suite 3420, Charlotte, NC 28202, (704) 332-1929.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dr Martinbeau was the kindest, caring doctor I have ever had and ever will have, no others like him. I was a patient for about 15 years, 10 in Charlotte and then moved to the beach and continued to come to Charlotte to see him. Along with Sandra his caring wife Charlene and Emily make such a caring team, I was blessed to have been in his care all those years. My last appointment was a couple of weeks prior to his retiring. He told me of his yearning to be with his family and enjoy life. I feel sad to loose him but happy for his retirement years to come. God has gained a doctor in heaven and will be with him in eternity. God bless you and your family.
I just read of his passing because I had a dream last night of him and his practice. We even took pictures before leaving our last appointment. Love to you always. Bonnie Zirkle

Prayers for your family. I met him my first year working as nurse on 7C oncology unit at Presbyterian hospital and saw how incredibly kind he was to the sickest of sick older ladies. I choose him to be my gyn dr when I ended up with issues and surgery. He was the best and kindest to me and hope your family is ok. God bless this Doctor and his wonderful wife and family.

Sandra, I just this week heard that Pierre had passed. I wasn't aware that he suffered from ALS. I feel that I have lost not only my doctor but a dear, long time friend. I was with you and Pierre since shortly after you started the practice. Wouldn't have dreamed of going anywhere else. The love and care you, Pierre and Tracy, Emily and Charlene gave your patients made us all feel like family. My heart is broken as I'm sure your whole family's is. You all will be forever in my heart and prayers. With much love....Marty Dixon

Sandra, my heart goes out to all of Pierre's family. I know the Holy Spirit guided me to your office. It was so friendly and very helpful. To find that you both knew the doctor in IL that operated on me was so comforting. The personal and caring attitude that you both shared was wonderful. I will continue to pray for each and everyone of you and your grandchildren.

Truly saddened to hear of Dr. Martimbeau's passing. I worked with him as an RN in surgery for many years at Presbyterian Main and Charlotte Surgery Center. Always enjoyed our conversations about his piloting as my oldest son was a military helicopter pilot. He was a wonderful surgeon. I will always think of him fondly. Praying for peace and comfort for you and your family.

To Sandra, Tracey and Family,

I had the distinct honor and pleasure to work with Dr. Martimbeau for 20 plus years as the practice's medical-surgical rep. During this time I learned a few things about him that are worth sharing.

Dr. Martimbeau was an extremely skilled and highly respected surgeon who practiced medicine for all of the right reasons. He truly cared for his patients and their well being and it showed by the way he carried himself every day...with dignity, confidence, humility and empathy. Also, he always had great taste in clothes!

Sandra, your expert knowledge and support as well as that from Tracey, Emily and Charlene, served as an example how to run a model specialty practice centered around the patients' well being.

I will miss Mr. Martimbeau's keen intellect and his infectious ability to verbally share his passions (in my case his love of flying and yachting). I always looked forward to talking with him.

Sandra, it was always obvious to me how much he loved his family. You can be somewhat comforted knowing Dr. Martimbeau made a profound and distinctly positive difference in our world.

Sincerely,

Tom Elrod

I briefly knew Dr Martimbeau through his son, Elliott. He was a great man, father, physcian, citizen, and humanitarian.

During this time, I was experiencing severe neurological symptoms; while his specialty was OB-GYN, he decided to set up a neuro consult for me at the Mayo Clinic (where he did his residency) in Rochester, MN. In hindsight, I saw that he did so not because I needed help, but because I was in pain. There is a subtle, yet significant difference between the two.

I have always said that he shared the qualities from Sean Connerys character in James Bond movies: a natural leader with great integrity/character, compassionate, clever/witty, genuine/sincere, trustworthy, and most of all, passionate. This is truly a rare combination and is also present in his family. Whether he was in his helicopter or on the high seas, he certainly lived life to the fullest; something something we should all strive to emulate.

There are no words adequate to describe the loss of Dr Pierre Martimbeau.

I would like to offer my deepest condolences and sympathies to his wonderful family: his wife Sandra; children Elliott, Tracey, and Nathalie; brothers Andre and Claude; sister Louise; and many nieces/nephews and grand children.

Peace I leave with you; my piece I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid John 14:27

Dear Mrs. Sandra-oh what a sweet hearted person Dr. Martimbeau practiced towards others. I worked with him @ Mercy Hospital Main when he 1st came to the hospital-so kind. Then my Husband needed him as a Dr. in 2006 for me, you & your Husband were so patient in explaining things I was scared re: surgery but God delievered. Wow-then my precious had rapid ALS & was called to Heaven 2016-I will be praying for you -Sandra, my heart & love goes out to you. In Christ, Patti Toney-Moore

My condolences to the family. Dr. Martimbeau took care of my grandmother, Ms. Randolph. He really cared for his patients beyond the walls of the office or hospital. I heard he wept upon hearing of my grandmother's passing. He was truly a special person.

Sincere condolences to Sandra and family. It is with shock and sadness that I read of Dr. Martimbeau's death. I started seeing Dr M in the early 80's after moving to Charlotte, and probably shortly after he and Sandra moved here as well. Like many others, I was impressed by his outstanding credentials, and was given excellent care by him for the next 35+ years. Not only excellent care, but always felt so comfortable knowing I could always reach and speak to Sandra at any time in the office. This kind of personal care is becoming so rare and difficult to find in the current healthcare environment. I am heartbroken to hear of Dr. M's death. Sandra and family, please receive my deepest heartfelt sympathy.

June 17, 2018

My deepest sympathies for a great man. Dr Martimbeau and Sandra saved my life. I am so thankful to have been taken care of by a brilliant man for over 30 years. May the family find peace knowing how many he saved. God Bless.
