Richard Junker Obituary


Richard Norman Junker
Mr. Junker, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at his home in Denver, NC. Norman was born September 28, 1944, in Charlotte, the youngest of five children born to Harrell McDonald and Elizabeth Caldwell Junker.
He started his own business at the age of 13 by selling bait and tackle from the family yard. He owned Norman's Bait and Tackle Shop and the Sportsman Lodge, both popular stops for anglers on Albemarle Road.
He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1962.
He attended Lenior Rhyne College and graduated Davidson College in 1966. In 1969 he received a Juris Doctorate Degree from Duke University School of Law, and practiced Law for a number of years.
While attending Davidson he partnered with his brothers and sister to purchase a farm on what was to become the Shores of Lake Norman. Through his vision Wher-Rena Marina was established as one of the first marinas, restaurants, and camp grounds on Lake Norman.
He currently owned Wher-Rena Boatland of Lake Norman, Mountain Creek Marina and Boat Storage of Sherrill's Ford and Boatland of Lake Wylie. In his thirty-seven years in the boat industry he was one of North Carolina's largest dealers and won numerous awards.
In 1978 he married Maria Margarita Flores and together they have four children, Kelly Elizabeth Junker of Charlotte, Jeffrey McDonald Junker of Lake Norman, Ashley Christina Junker and Jonathan Hunter Junker of the home. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Constantina Flores, sisters and brothers, Carolyn Junker Irvin of Cornelius, Harrell McDonald Junker and wife Sandy of Lake Norman. Rebecca Junker Griffin and husband Bill of Mint Hill, George Caldwell Junker and Diane Ledford of Huntersville. Surviving in-laws include, Mercy and Jorge Bejarano, Dr. Bill and Hermi Anderson, Marcelo and Sonya Flores, Armando and Lori Flores and Mike and Magdalena Hague.
He enjoyed collecting famous signatures, stamps and historical memorabilia. He loved reading, traveling, selling boats and most of all he loved family and friends.
Through his vision the Junker Scholarship Fund was established to honor his mother in 1986.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Elizabeth Caldwell Junker Scholarship Fund of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Rd., Mint Hill, NC 28227.
Funeral service will be at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Coburn L. Colwell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Evergreen Burial Park, Mint Hill, NC. The family will receive friends at Raymer Funeral Home of Huntersville, NC on Monday, December 29, 2003 from 7-9:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Dr. John Hartness, Charles Tilson, Jack Gould, James Pace, Jack Cobb, John Godfrey, Keith Harris, Victor Winebarger.
Raymer Funeral Home is serving the Junker family.
