Robert Herman-Smith Obituary

Dr. Robert Lewis Herman-Smith MATTHEWS - Dr. Robert Lewis Herman-Smith, 56, of Matthews passed away October 21, 2018. Born April 13, 1962, in Gastonia, he was the son of the late William Lewis Herman and Eunice Matthews Herman. Bob is survived by his spouse and love of his life, Jeff Herman-Smith, and son, Colin Herman-Smith, of Matthews. Bob was a lifelong learner and a soft-spoken but passionate advocate for what he believed in. After graduating from Hickory High School, he attended Lenoir-Rhyne College and later graduated from UNC Charlotte. He earned a Master's degree in psychology from Duquesne University and then worked as a therapist and staff psychologist serving young children and their families. After several years, he returned to graduate school, earning an MSW from UNC Chapel Hill and a PhD in Social Welfare from Case Western Reserve University, and then took a job as a professor. He loved teaching and received several teaching awards and award nominations from his students, which was his proudest achievement. At the time of his death, he was the proprietor of Dr. Bob Writing Consultation, which allowed him the opportunity to do online teaching with college students around the world. He attended St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Charlotte. In addition to his spouse and son, Bob is survived by his sister, Lesia Thomas, and husband Fred of Elizabethton, TN; nephew Justin Miller of Johnson City, TN, and nephew Adam Miller of Summit, MS. A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 4, 2018, at 3pm, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Vale, NC. I glanced at the chair you once sat in while at my office. You were always gracious and caring. "The world cares very little about what a MAN or WOMAN knows; it is what the MAN or WOMAN is able to do" (Booker T. Washington). "Gray skies are just clouds passing over" (Duke Ellington). I miss you... Dr. Bob!!! I glanced at a chair you occupied at some point in my office several years ago. Life can change at a blinking of an eye. I will always remember you and the positive impact you made on the lives of people who came in contact with you. "Gray skies are just clouds passing over" (Duke Ellington). Bob will always be one of the smartest, funniest people I will ever know - and hands down - best story teller. I ache at the thought of him being gone from this earth.

Colin and Jeff are in my thoughts.

Dr. Bob always said to focus on your strengths and writing is not one if mine, but I will try to express my gratitude in a few words.
Some people come into your life and make an impact while others show you how to make (and be) the impact. Dr. Bob did both! Much love and peace send your way Dr. Bob and family!

A wonderful and compassionate individual is no longer with us. Dr. Bob was more than an educator! He significantly impacted multitudes of people and especially undergraduate and graduate students who pursued degrees in social work at UNCC. His legacy will live on in the students and professionals that he taught, nurtured, and pushed them to excel. Now that Mr. Bob has crossed the bar...something all of us must do at life's end...we can loose him and let him go. There is a brighter side somewhere and certainly Mr. Bob can walk around HEAVEN all day. "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way" (Booker T. Washington).
