Roy Alexander Obituary

Roy Alexander, the first executive director of the Davidson Lands Conservancy and a longtime Mecklenburg County environmental educator, died suddenly on Sunday.

Under Alexander, the fledgling Davidson group became one of the most effective land trusts of its size and a part of the small town's fabric.

"There was an absolute metamorphosis of DLC almost since the moment Roy took over as director," said Jim Fuller, a Davidson lawyer and town commissioner who was president when the conservancy hired Alexander in 2006.

The nonprofit group, formed in 2000, now protects land at eight sites including a rare wetland threatened by development that is a nature preserve. It launched World of Wonder, a program that engages families with nature.

And Alexander became a go-to expert for town officials on planning and environmental matters.

Walks in the woods with the bearded, avuncular Alexander became quiet lessons in plant identification, the quirks of north Mecklenburg's rolling topography and why it was worth saving.

"He was just an indomitable spirit," said former conservancy president Pam Dykstra. "Walking with Roy, he knew every plant he found – there wasn't a flower he didn't know. He had just a wealth of information and a wealth of heart and a wealth of love for the land and this area."

Alexander, a Davidson College graduate, began his career as a biology teacher at Independence High School. He later spent 20 years at Charlotte's Discovery Place science museum, where he was director of biological and earth sciences.

Alexander was a founder of the group that became Mecklenburg's first Sierra Club chapter. He served on city and county parks commissions, water quality groups and served two terms on the State Parks and Recreation Trust Fund board. The Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District named him winner of its urban conservation award in 2009.

"I've always told myself we get the government or the community or the society we deserve, and if we are not out there trying to make it better, it's going to go the opposite way," he said when the Observer named him a Guardian of the Environment in 2003. "It's an obligation that every individual has to do what they can for the general good."

As the Davidson conservancy's sole staff member, said current president Rob Van Epps, "Roy was certainly the heart and soul of the organization. Roy was extremely passionate about land conservation, and that passion is what kept us going."

At the conservancy's recent annual meeting, Fuller noted, officers from past boards also attended.

"It was because of Roy's personality, his leadership and absolute devotion to protecting the environment that people who served with him retained an interest," he said. "He was a wonderful person and a wonderful conservationist, and there's an empty space in my pantheon of heroes today."

My condolences to Roy's family -- I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Roy in the late 60s from the Garr Memorial Church days, and he was my late husband Dave Wood's roommate just before we were married in 1968. We all had some great times together & I hope it will bring some comfort to the family to know that way back in the college days Roy always brought a ray of sunshine each time he entered a room. Such a smart man, funny and fun-loving. He was the true definition of a good man. He will be held in good memory by a lot of people who thought so highly of him, and it was well-deserved. Sincerely, Pam Wood Austin

Roy's accomplishments will make him memorable for all of us who knew him.

One of his accomplishments that was not included in either the story or in the obituary: Roy was a founding board member of The Charlotte Film Society in 1982. He served as treasurer for several years in that then fledgeling organization, thirty plus years later, a thriving contributor to the Charlotte culture scene.

My condolences to Roy's family.

I had the pleasure of working with Roy at Discovery Place for most of his 20 years there. We had many adventures in the museum and in the field. He developed the popular Naturalists Weekend at Wildacres, which continues to be an annual program of DP 30+ years later. Played many volleyball games with Roy, who was a skilled and competitive player. His commitment to conservation of our natural areas is unmatched. He will be missed dearly! My deepest condolences to Sue, his kids and all his friends!

I had the pleasure of working with Roy and a great staff at Discovery Place for 9 years. One night while driving the van with a few of us to Savannah for a meeting, Roy pulled us over on the overpass to watch the meteor shower. I always think of Roy and that great moment with every meteor shower I see, and think of him when I walk our greenways. Job well done Roy. We appreciate all you have done in preserving our environment.

I remember Mr. Alexander from Independence High School, class of 1971. He is the only Biology teacher this English and History major ever had who actually made any science subject understandable, interesting, and, as a result, passable with a good grade. Thank you, Mr. Alexander. May you rest in peace.

Roy Alexander believed in me my senior year in 71 and knew I was different, one of the upcoming 'hippie" generation. It was because of his guidance and mentoring me that he was instrumental in the man I became. Thank you Mr.A. Prayers for the family, God's blessings.

I am so sorry to hear about Roy and send my condolences to Sue and the family. I first met him on the Catawba Lands Conservancy board and he later monitored the conservation easements on my family's farms. No more could have possibly been familiar with more of the conserved lands in our area than Roy. His legacy is significant.

He added so much when I was at Independence. His classes were as great as the camping trips both the weekend and the cross country trips. Then I lucked up again and got to touch base with him at Discovery Place.

I was one of his many students of Biology at Independence, and worked with him one summer on a project to engage inner city kids with nature through bike trips. I lost touch with him after going off to college in California, but his influence came with me -- I majored in biology. That he did so much for the protection of nature does not surprise me in the least, but it makes his absence that much more painful.

Roy was a kind person whose church was nature. I'll always remember Roy when I walk in the woods, paddle a kayak, snorkel in the reefs, garden my vegetable patch, or watch a sunset.
