Mrs. Craig, age 99, of Charlotte passed away Tuesday January 20, 2009 at Avante at Charlotte. She was born in Greenville, SC on July 24, 1909 to the Reverend Samuel Mims and Lillie Kelley Collier, received her education in Greenville at Greenville Woman's College, moved to Charlotte in 1927 and attended Central High Business School. She married Paul Hamlin McLaurin in 1929 and they were married thirty-four years when he passed away in 1962. Mrs. Craig retired from Mill Power Supply Company in 1976 a subsidiary of Duke Power after 31 years of service. She married John Royalty Craig in 1967 and had twenty-eight years of happiness. He passed away January 17, 1995. She was a charter member of Green Memorial Baptist Church, having taught from the nursery through ages of four and five, served on a number of committees, also secretary of Sunday School for many years.
She is survived by two step-sons, John Michael Craig and wife Stephanie and James Wayne Craig and wife Marcia; and two grandchildren, Andrea Michael Arnette and John Ashton Craig. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, Joshua Arnette, Ashley Arnette, Jeremy Arnette and Nori Craig.
Nana or Nana Ruby, as everyone called her, lived her life to honor Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. She gave of herself to others for both friends and family, she went above and beyond. She loved to sing and be involved in whatever she could. Nana also adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren as they did her.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 23 at Green Memorial Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Matthew Eades and Reverend Doctor Ralph E. Holt. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service Chapel 5716 Monroe Rd.
