I realize its been some time since Uncle Hal's passing but a moment doesn't pass in my life that I am not applying some of the values that were instilled in me as camper from Poodle to Rebel and then a counselor to cover over 10 years. I basically grew up with these people and I can confidently say that relationships/friendships were forged that have been life lasting. My deepest condolences will always be with Sandy, Susan, Lee and Robyn as I grew up with each of them as well and know there was not a larger person in life than Hal Pinstein. One can only hope that Hal understood the impact he had in each and every one of us. We looked up to him with admiration, respect and most importantly love. He was the guiding light in our lives and that beacon he lit in all of us is still a piece of each of us today. I couldn't begin to stress the importance and the depth of the life lessons learned each day/week and summer at Maplewood as they are still a big part of who I am today. In summary, Hal Pinstein was the pinnacle of leaders, the impetus of inspiration, and the true definition of a Mensch. In speaking on behalf of all of us that passed under his wing we will forever miss you but will remember the highlight reels from each of our summers with him. Sincere condolences to his family I'm sure his passing has left a gaping void not to be filled but revered.

When I say that I literally grew up at Maplewood Day Camp, I literally grew up there. I lived right across the street from the camp at 121 Foundry Street from 1973 when I was born until 1996. Our neighbor Donna who lived in the house next to the entrance across from us was older than my brother and I and she worked at Maplewood as well and would take us there during the day while my parents worked. Both my brother and I had early experiences with "Uncle Hal" at a very young age. Years later Uncle Hal parked his Saab at the top of our driveway in the early spring of 1990 and came down to the house and asked my parents if "I could help him get the camp ready for the upcoming summer." Of course my parents said sure because it was "Uncle Hal." It was basically Hal and I getting the place ready. Painting the pools, mowing lawns, pulling weeds, you name it, we did it!!! We talked about tennis, baseball, anything really. Listened to Celtics and Red Sox games on the radio. Uncle Hal taught me a lot about hard work even when I was 16 years old and I carry that passion with me today at 43. I would open and close the camp every year until 1994. In 1991, Uncle Hal needed a junior counselor half way through the summer and I can remember like it was today and asked me as I was sitting on the tractor out front of the old tennis club, "Greg, what do you think about being a camp counselor?" I said, "Anything for Uncle Hal", with a huge smile. Being a camp counselor for the next 4 summers changed me. And I owe that to Uncle Hal.
I left Easton in 1996 and my parents sold our house in 1998 and have really not gone back. My brother also worked at Maplewood as a life guard as well for a couple of summers.
In saying that all of that, I never knew that Hal passed away in 2006 and am sad to hear it all of these years later. Uncle Hal is a great man who is loved by all! I have heard his voice from the megaphone in my travels at POW WOW or his many announcements to the camp over my time there as a kid and as a young adult. Uncle Hal loved what he did, loved his family, loved what he built out of a water hole in Easton and he enjoyed every moment of it. Clearly that passion still holds true today with what Lee and Sue have carried on from their parents. Both Sandy and Uncle Hal are wonderful, caring people who gave kids of all ages a place to go, to get away even just for a day and to remember what being a kid is all about.
Maplewood Day Camp was a mini-Disney World. To me, Uncle Hal was another version of Walt Disney himself as they both shared a similar vision in creating a place for kids, families and adults that makes memories to cherish forever.
I had the privilege and honor to work at Maplewood Day Camp for Uncle Hal. But I also worked Walt Disney World for a number of years during my time at Maplewood and years later.
I consider Uncle Hal a visionary, a pioneer, an innovator like Walt Disney in creating a magical place out of a watering hole in South Easton, MA across the street from my childhood home. Much like Walt Disney did in Orlando, he had a vision of Walt Disney World from the wet lands of central Florida to be the most magical place on earth. Both men had the same thought and created their passion to a reality which are shared to this day and will be forever. And both delivered their promise.
Future generations of campers who will turn into staff will come to Maplewood for many years to come and will continue to make memories and magical moments for kids and adults of all ages that they will remember for the rest of their lives. And their kids will go to Maplewood and so on.
If I still lived across the street, I would send my daughter to Maplewood to experience what I did. Greatest memories EVER! Thanks Uncle Hal!!! You will forever be in our hearts. Especially mine.
Yours truly and sincerely, Greg Sheppard

I can hear Uncle Hal cheering us on at the beach, the softball field, at color wars and at the Pow Wow singing competition. He instilled in us the most valuable life lesson, "Just Try", with his infectious enthusiasm and bottomless spirit. His memory will serve as an everlasting blessing and brings comfort to all who knew him and learned from him. David
