Sarah Abernethy Obituary

Sarah Harper Abernethy
'Aunt Sharper'
Miss Abernethy, 94, known as Aunt Sharper by her great nephews and nieces, was born in Mecklenburg County. She passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at the Asbury Care Center in Charlotte, NC. She was the daughter of the late Dr. J.S. Abernethy and his second wife, Hattie Davidson Abernethy, a direct descendent of Brigadier-General William Lee Davidson.
Miss Abernethy was a long time school teacher for deaf students. She was employed with the State Schools for the Deaf, in both Boston, MA and Riverside, CA. She was the beloved Aunt of Alexander McNeill, Jr., Patsy Bryan Szalecki, Kathryn Dixon, Dorothy Ann Randolph, and their families.
Aunt Sharper loved to visit with relatives in the Charlotte area. She is also remembered for her love of knitting. Many blankets and slippers decorated our homes as a result of her favorite past time. Her nurse at the Asbury Care Center recalled the time she had a beautiful smile on her face one day, so unexpected due to the long term effects of Alzheimer's.
A funeral service was held Saturday, August 21, 2004 at Harry & Bryant Company. A private burial followed at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Huntersville. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation at Aldersgate, 3800 Shamrock Road, Charlotte, NC 28215.
Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Miss Abernethy.

Aunt Sharper was always eager to get to know people. I remember her knitting the most. She always had a knitting project she was working on, whether it was a new blanket or some slippers, she always thought of others and their needs. She will be sorely missed, and always remembered.

Aunt Sharper was a remarkable woman..definitely way ahead of her time. She was giving, and seemed to know how to live life to its fullest. I learned alot from her during my brief visits.
