Teresinha Toosi Obituary

Teresinha Quadros Toosi CHARLOTTE - Teresinha Quadros Toosi passed peacefully into God's light on November 16, 2017, at her home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Teresinha (Nina, to many who new her) was born in Bahia, Brazil on January 6, 1928, to Cesar Rocha Quadros and Almerinda Vaz de Quadros. The 11th of 13 children, this delightful woman with twinkling eyes and a contagious giggle made her home in Bahia for her first 35 years. She then moved to Austin, Texas, where she spent most of her next 55 years. Nina worked very hard in Brazil before she left, saving money by walking to her teaching job instead of riding the bus. Her dream was to complete her studies in the United States pursuing a Masters degree in Linguistics. Her dream came true when she earned a Fulbright scholarship to study at the University of Texas, quite an achievement for a woman from a small town in Brazil, in the early 60s. Always loyal and generous, Nina did not leave Brazil until she had purchased a house for her mother and sister, both widows with children of their own. In 1963 she married the love of her life, Mohammed Toosi, who was working on his PhD at the University of Texas. Together they graciously raised two children, and shared their warmth, wisdom, and compassion with many others. Nina went to Catholic church regularly and loyally donated to too many charities to mention. When her health began to decline, she and her husband left Austin and moved to a house across the street from their daughter and her family in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2013. Nina is now reunited with her parents, and many of her brothers and sisters. Her spirit is carried forward by her husband, Mohammed Ali Toosi and her children Soraya Toosi and Cyrus Toosi, as well as her son-in-law Alan Robinson Becker, daughter-in-law Halda Loup Toosi, and grandchildren Camille and Walden Becker and Shelby Toosi. Heartfelt thanks go to Saint Ann's Catholic Church in Charlotte, who honored this extraordinary woman exactly as she would have loved with beautiful services on November the 18th, and to her many other adoring honorary daughters in multiple continents, who continue to follow her example of genuine love and compassion.

Mae,

There is not a day that goes by that I do not miss you. I keep looking at my phone wondering when you are going to call or when I should call you. I don't live so close to Charlotte and am not able to visit you at the cemetery but am always thinking of you and Papa. For some who had rheumatic fever and was told that you would never make it to adulthood, you sure proved them wrong. Please take care of papa as I know you both are together and I hope to one day join you two. I love you and miss you so much.

How blessed are the many family, friends, and strangers who were touched by the warmth and compassion of Nina Quadros Toosi! I was lucky enough to meet her when I was 15, when I met her daughter, Soraya, who became my lifelong sister-of-the-heart. Nina became like a second mother to me, welcoming me into the Toosi home and activities with more graciousness than I had ever witnessed from anyone before or since. I always left her presence feeling lighter and happier, after experiencing her loving attention and genuine interest and hospitality. She had a deep and abiding faith and was devoted to her family and to making the world a better place. When I think of people who have shown me how to live, I think of Nina and I try to follow her example. Everyone who was fortunate enough to bask in her light, came to love this sparkling, kind, extraordinary woman who was small in stature, but a huge powerhouse of goodness. She is greatly missed. Thankfully, her beautiful spirit lives on in the many people and places she touched. Thank you God for the gift of her life!
