Saddened when I read this today! I met Gene at Western Carolina when my younger brother was a student there in the 1970s. I attended a different college, but always looked forward to visiting Western knowing that I would see Gene and enjoy his genuine friendship, and whimsical humor. He made my trips there from Raleigh, NC worthwhile. He immediately became friends with my parents, as age was no barrier for Gene. He loved people, and his love was contagious. People returned their love to Gene. In a sense a short life, but what a wonderful world it was with him in it. Hadn't seen him in several decades, but I will still miss him, however I have peace & wish the same for his family, knowing that he has gone home to be with God.

Life is a gift from God. Our children, family, friends, neighbors, and strangers are all gifts to be savored. Although some days may be full of hardship and sadness, each breath, heartbeat, and thought illustrates the beautiful gift of life. When a loved one is lost, try to avoid the feeling of being robbed or wronged. Keep the positive memories alive and thank God for the blessings in your past, present, and future.

Even thought I hung out with Mike and Mark most of the time way back when, I did get to know Gene through the years. He was a great guy, always friendly with a sense of humor. One of my first memories of Gene was when his brother Mike and I worked at Harris Teeter at Independence & Idlewild together. One night after we got off of work Gene came by in one of the Stegall Trucks. We proceeded to take a little "joy ride" down Independence towards Monroe. I will be praying for the family.

I had the privilege of being classmates with Gene during our formative years of Elementary, Junior and Senior High School days. Always with a keen sense of humor and as kind as any man could be, Gene was that guy everyone liked and an absolute joy to be around. To Ann and all of Gene's family, our sincerest thoughts and prayers for the loss of a wonderful man. He will be greatly missed.

When I moved to Charlotte in 1989 Gene was one of the first people I met. We both lived at Runaway Bay at the time. Gene seemed to know everybody and he was often referred to as the "Mayor of Runaway Bay". I had just moved here from New Hampshire and knew nobody. Gene made sure to take the time to introduce me to lots of other residents, many of whom are among my best friends today. I will never forget his act of kindness to me. God Bless you Gene.
