Walter Doley Obituary

Walter Doley CHARLOTTE - Mr. Doley died peacefully on September 20, 2012 in the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born April 20, 1923 in New Haven, Connecticut, the 5th child of Austrian immigrant parents, Anastasia and Michael Doley. Mr. Doley was an Electricians Mate 2nd Class in the United States Navy and proudly served his country in the Asiatic Pacific, African, Middle Eastern, European and American Theatres. Upon returning to the U.S. he attended and graduated from the University of Richmond in Virginia earning a degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Mr. Doley moved to Charlotte in 1957 with Kemper Insurance Company, and retired as an officer of South Eastern Fire, a division of Barclays American in 1985. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Mr. Doley enjoyed golf, bridge and dancing. He was a sports enthusiast and delighted in entertaining friends. His greatest treasure in life was his family. He is survived by his wife, Dot, of 61 years and 2 daughters. Val and her husband David Coleman of Richmond, Va., Carol and her husband Bobby Cockerham of Charlotte. "Poppa" was truly adored by his five grandchildren, Walter Coleman and wife Shalen of Richmond, Va., David Coleman and Janie Coleman of Washington, DC, Tripp Cockerham and wife Traci of Louisville, KY and Betsy Cockerham of Nashville, TN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel Parish 3016 Providence Road on Saturday, September 29 at 10 am. The family will greet friends following the mass in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care PO Box 33549 Charlotte, NC 28233, the Southern Piedmont Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive Charlotte, NC 28215, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Clare Bridge Place at the Carriage Club and the Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Hospital for their kind and loving care of Mr. Doley, a proud member of America's Greatest Generation. J.B. Tallent is serving the family of Walter Doley.
