Mr. & Mrs. Somerville, were loved to pieces at Spaugh Jr. High. My Mother just called me to tell me she read his obituary in the Observer. She commented that he had met all her older children Teresa, Diane, Wayne, Rick, Jack and Donna at Spaugh, and then went to Enderly Park and our youngest showed up, Michael. He said to Mama "Oh no, not another Rhodes". He was adored.

The only time I was ever sent to the principal's office, for getting in a fight at Spaugh, I was mortified about the consequences I would face when I got home that day. However, it only took Mr. Somerville a few moments of listening to the other student involved to correctly discern that I was not at all at fault, and he sent me on to class. I never have forgotten that lesson: that it pays to be honest and do the right thing, even when falsely accused. Thank you, Mr. Somerville, for the legacy you gave us all. I'll be praying for your family.

Mr. Somerville and I had lots of "meetings" in my 3 years at Spaugh. The walk to his office was no picnic, but the lessons he taught me, in a truly kind & gentle way, stayed with me. He is one of my lifes most unforgettable characters and an inportant part of my most formative years. Rest in Peace Mr. Somerville.

To Luann and Family,
We know you will miss being able to be with your Dad here on earth, but he sure left you all with such wonderful memories. Mr. Somerville has a new body that is pain free now and we can praise God for that. May your Dad's love and legacy give you peace and comfort in the days ahead. Our prayers are with you and the family.
Love,
Joe & Sherrill Beatty

Saw Mr. Somerville at the closing ceremony for Spaugh. Could not believe he recognized me after all these years! One of those teachers that had an impact on practically every student. May he rest in peace. Job well done.

Walt was an active participant of the Tyvola Senior Center enjoying exercising in the Health Suite and eating lunch with his friends. He was such a gentleman and always postive, sharing his bright smile with everyone. He is missed by all!

I have very fond memories of Mr. Somerville (or Walter G as we called him) from my time at Spaugh 1968 to 1971. He was a fair man, and was respected by the staff and students alike.

I'll never forget Mr. Somerville! As a 7th grader at Spaugh in about 1966, I was the winnder of the Charlotte Observer Spelling Bee, and he couldn't have been prouder. He actually took me to the County-wide Bee at another school on the day it was held, where I missed winning by 3 words (it was a written Bee!) RIP Mr. Somerville. To his family, you were blessed to have such a wonderful man in your lives and now he has received his well-deserved rest with Jesus.
