Warren Liddell Burgess
Mr. Burgess, 56, of Charlotte died at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte on Tuesday, May 10, 2005. A service to celebrate his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 17 at 10:00 AM with the Reverend Dr. William P. Wood and Reverend Susan M. Roddey.
Graveside service for Mr. Burgess will be held following the service at 3:00 PM in Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, SC. The family will receive friends at the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
Warren was born in Fort Monmouth, N.J., December 29, 1948 son of the late Albert Frierson Burgess, Jr. and Sara Baskin Burgess of Athens, Georgia, and was a graduate of the University of Georgia. He was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity. Mr. Burgess was a Senior Urban Designer with the City of Charlotte for 25 years and was the Planning Director for Davidson, NC for three years. He was currently employed with Neighboring Concepts as an Urban Planner. An active member of First Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder and worked with Crisis Assistance Ministries. Warren also was instrumental in helping start Loaves and Fishes at First Presbyterian Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed fly fishing, reading and sketching. He was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather who will be missed by his family and friends.
Surviving in addition to his mother are daughters, Ansley Rebecca Burgess and Bonnie Anne Burgess; brothers, Albert Frierson Burgess, III of Anderson, SC, Richard Hamilton Burgess and his wife, Jenny of Spartanburg, SC; sister, Katherine Anne Duttweiler and her husband, James of Fort Campbell, KY; son-in-law, Jerald Thomas; two grandchildren, Jerald Thomas, Jr. and Frances Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his former wife and friend, Jane Waters Burgess and friend, Roy Keirn.

My father was the greatest man I ever knew. He was so sincere, caring and showed compassion for every person he met. My dad died a few days afer Mother's Day.He called me on the Sunday before & expressed how proud he was of me being such a great mother. He also expressed how much he wanted to take his 2 grandchildren out for lunch when he would be discharged from the hospital. I will never forget his love for his family and friends. Alot of people did not realize that my dad endured a lot of pain his entire life. He would not let it be known, he would pray to his father in heaven to give him relief. I know that my dad is now my guardian angel and will forever shine his love to me and my sister. I miss you daddy!

I first met Warren in 1975. I was fresh out of college, starting my first job, and away from home. It was my good fortune to start in Charlotte with Hensley Schmidt, joining Bill Finger and Warren. They welcomed me to each of their homes and created an atmosphere of creativity and teamwork at the office. We had many a laugh together. He was always sketching or drawing. He would come into my office with his pens and say: 'Hey Moose, what color is this pen?'

Within the year, the company transferred me to another office and Warren presented me with a caricature of myself that I have kept for 30 years. In light lettering on a muslcular arm is written 'Moose'.

I was in Graduate School when Warren was an undergraduate in Environmental Design. He was a well-respected member of the profession and I got to talk with him a few times over the past several years. Our prayers are with you as you go through this difficult time. He was loved by all who knew him. God Bless you.

A friend for almost 30 years, Warren was one of the kindest souls I have ever known. He was a teacher, a visionary, and a scholar. He will be missed greatly by all of us, even those that never had the pleasure of meeting him. May we keep his vision alive in the development in and around the charlotte area.

What a talented and great guy. He helped so much with the Dilworth Preservation effort and was an invaluable resource for Charlotte. He also was a wonderful artist and did a beautiful rendering of our stone house at 700 Mt Vernon Ave (now sold). We will treasure it and our memories of Warren forever.
